William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne
William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne (born March 15, 1779 in London , † November 24, 1848 in Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire ) was a British nobleman and politician. He is considered to be Queen Victoria's mentor . The metropolis of Melbourne (the capital of the Australian state of Victoria ) was named after him .
Life
William Lamb was the son of Peniston Lamb, 1st Baron Melbourne (1745-1828), who was raised to Viscount Melbourne in 1781 , and his wife Elizabeth Millbanke . Since his mother had many affairs, it is only a guess that George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont was his biological father. He was the eldest of five children and his sister Emily married Lord Palmerston in 1839 .
From 1806 to 1812 and from 1816 to the death of his father in 1828, whose title of nobility and seat in the House of Lords he inherited, Melbourne was MP in the House of Commons for the constituencies of Leominster , Haddington , Portarlington , Peterborough , Hertfordshire and Newport . Since 1827 he was a member of the Privy Council . From 1827 to 1828 he was Chief Secretary for Ireland , from 1830 to 1834 he was British Home Secretary ( home secretary , 1830-1834). In 1834 and from 1835 to 1841 he was Lord High Treasurer and thus Prime Minister .
His wife was the novelist Caroline Lamb . The only child of this marriage, the son George Augustus Frederick Lamb , born in 1807 , died in 1836. His title of nobility was inherited by his brother Frederick Lamb .
