Vitaly Popkow ( Виталий Попков , born June 16, 1983 in Novoselyzja ) is a Ukrainian- Russian track and road cyclist .

Athletic career

From 2002 to 2009 Vitaliy Popkow was part of the internationally successful four-man track in Ukraine. In changing line-ups, the Ukrainian was U23 European Champion in 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2005, 2007 and 2009 the four-man also won one run of the Track Cycling World Cup . In 2007 he became vice world champion in the team pursuit together with Lyubomyr Polatajko , Maxym Polishchuk and Vitaly Schtschedow . In 2009 he won the single pursuit at the World Cup in Cali . In 2004 and 2008 he started in a foursome at the Olympic; In 2004 the team came in sixth and in 2008 in 14th place.

Then Popkow put his focus on road cycling. From 2009 he drove for the ISD team . In his first year there, he won the Romanian Tour of Szeklerland race . The following year he was Ukrainian champion in road racing and individual time trial and he won several races and stages such as the Grand Prix Adygeja and the Norwegian Rogaland Grand Prix . In 2012 he won the Grand Prix of Moscow and again the Tour of Szekerland . In 2013 he had further stage successes and won the Polish Course de la Solidarité Olympique .

In 2016, Popkow switched to the Russian Cycling Association and competed in the Russian road championships in 2017 and 2018. His best placement was 14th in 2018 when he finished 14th in the individual time trial.
