Wolfgang Nitschke (wrestler)
Wolfgang Nitschke (born March 3, 1947 in Waldenburg near Glauchau ) is a former German wrestler and trainer . He was vice European champion in 1969 in free style welterweight.
Career
Wolfgang Nitschke began wrestling as a teenager. Although he did not achieve any major success as a teenager, he was delegated to SC Leipzig due to his talent and there by the coaches Adolf Franke and Prof. Dr. Horst Rothert trained to be an excellent freestyle wrestler. He first drew attention to himself on the international wrestling mat in 1967 when he took an excellent 2nd place in the welterweight division at the "Tournament of Olympic Hopes" in Koszalin / Poland .
In 1968 Wolfgang finished second in the GDR welterweight championship behind Martin Heinze from Halle and in 1969 he won his first GDR welterweight championship. In the same year he was also used at the European Free Style Championships in Sofia . There like him succeeded launched brilliantly on the international wrestling mat, as he was behind the Soviet athlete Yuri Gussow Vice European champion .
In 1970 and 1971 it wasn't quite as successful. After all, he finished fifth at the 1970 European Championships in Berlin and came 8th at both 1970 and 1971 World Championships.
In 1972 he won another medal, the bronze, at the European Championships in Katowice , this time starting in the middleweight division. He also defeated the German champion Peter Neumair . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Wolfgang had trained again in the welterweight division. He fought well in the Olympic tournament, also defeated the later silver medalist Jan Karlsson from Sweden , but retired after defeats against the Bulgarian Jancho Pawlow and the later Olympic champion Wayne Wells , USA , and took an excellent 5th place.
After 1972 Wolfgang Nitschke no longer appeared in international championships. He trained as a trainer and worked as a trainer in the wrestling association of the GDR. In 1991 he took over the office of national coach for the freestyle area. He held this office for well over 10 years and was extremely successful in it. Wrestlers like Alexander Leipold , Andreas Schröder , Heiko Balz , Sven Thiele , Hans Gstöttner , Rolf Lyding , Georg Schwabenland , Arawat Sabejew , Reiner Heugabel , Andre Backhaus and Jürgen Scheibe owe him many successes.
