Location of Woltersdorf in Brandenburg

Woltersdorf village church

The village of Woltersdorf has been one of 23 districts of the Nuthe-Urstromtal community in the Teltow-Fläming district in Brandenburg since 1993 . With 1020 inhabitants (as of 2017), the place is the most populous part of the municipality and has an area of 37.9 km².

location

Woltersdorf is located about one and a half kilometers northeast of Luckenwalde in a shallow depression of the Nuthe and Steinerfließ (tributary to the Nuthe), which flow through the village. The village of Ruhlsdorf is in the northwest, the village of Scharfenbrück in the east and the village of Gottow in the southeast. In the immediate vicinity of the village there are extensive pine forests, fields, meadows and humid and wet landscapes.

Origin of name

The clear origin of the name for Woltersdorf is not exactly clear. However, there are different approaches as to how the name could have come about. The part of the name Walter means in Old High German "The flowing Lord" and later "The master or master". An inaccurate spelling may have turned the “a” into an “o”. Another meaning of the name Walter can be derived from the southern German "woltern". This means something like “able” or “very”. Or maybe the name of the founder of the place was Walter or Wolter and named the place after that.

history

Settlement of the area around Woltersdorf can be proven on the basis of numerous archaeological finds. Remnants from the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age reveal that the Nuthetal was already inhabited by people a few thousand years ago or was used as a resting place or work place (see list of ground monuments in Nuthe-Urstromtal ). So far, however, no traces from the Slav period have been found. However, it can be assumed that Slavs also lived here, or at least that the area was within the scope of the Slavs.

The history of Woltersdorf goes back to at least 1285. The first mention of the village takes place here. The reason for the mention is the sale of the Luckenwalder castle district, to which Woltersdorf also belonged, by Olzo and Wedego von Richow to the Zinna monastery . Before that, the area belonged to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg, which was founded in 968. The Woltersdorfers made their livelihood with agriculture and livestock.

In 1413 there were several robberies by aristocrats from Brandenburg on the Zinnai area. Many villages were plundered, including Woltersdorf. After a few arguments and a brief peace, however, such raids kept coming back.

As a result of succession disputes, on April 27, 1478 there was a skirmish near Woltersdorf, in which the Margrave of Brandenburg defeated Hungarian troops.

The land register of the Zinnar monastery in 1480 states that in addition to Woltersdorf 28 other monastery villages are owned. Typically for this time, Woltersdorf was a small round without a church with a hoof number of 16. The farmhouses were made of wood, were built in post construction and were covered with straw or wooden shingles. Compared to other villages, it was relatively small with its 12 hoppers, 6 kossas, the village schoolboy and the families belonging to it. The population is likely to have been around a hundred. Most of the donations were made in kind to the monastery. Furthermore, taxes had to be paid to the pastor in Luckenwalde, because without their own church, the villagers had to visit the church in Luckenwalde. The dam guard in Woltersdorf also got his share. He was in charge of the dams around the village, which were supposed to prevent flooding from the nearby waters.

With the dissolution of the monastery, Woltersdorf came under the administration of the Zinna Office from 1533 to 1872 . The place burned down in the Thirty Years War in 1642 and was rebuilt in the following 30 years.

On November 16, 1911, a separate church was consecrated in Woltersdorf . This was donated by Otto Boenicke, a cigar manufacturer from Berlin. He also spent a large part of the time on the rectory so that his own pastor could live in Woltersdorf. In August, the parish of Luckenwalde was cleared and a separate parish was established with the villages of Schöneweide, Gottow, Woltersdorf, Scharfenbrück, Ruhlsdorf, Liebätz and Märtensmühle. On August 8, 1917, the church bells were sacrificed for the war. However, the pastor managed to keep the largest one. It was not until 1934 that new bells were inaugurated, which were cast in Apolda.

From 1920 there was also electricity in Woltersdorf. More and more households joined and almost the entire village could be supplied with electricity. The population grew, also due to the connection to the Berlin – Leipzig railway line , which brought numerous day trippers from Berlin to the town on the weekends.

On December 6, 1993 Woltersdorf was incorporated into the new municipality of Nuthe-Urstromtal. In the same year a bridge and a pedestrian tunnel were built at the station.
