The LPGA Championship is one of the four LPGA major tournaments , together with the United States Women's Open Championship , the Women's British Open and the Kraft Nabisco Championship , but is not part of the Women's European Tour (LET). It was the second tournament in the history of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) after the United States Women's Open Championship . It is currently named KPMG Women's PGA Championship because of its sponsors .
With prize money of 3.5 million US dollars , the winner automatically qualifies for the LPGA Tour Championship , which will be held at the end of the PGA Tour season.
Previous tournament names
The name of the tournament has changed several times over the years:

- 1987-1993: Mazda LPGA Championship
- 1994-2000: McDonald's LPGA Championship
- 2001–2003: McDonald's LPGA Championship presented by AIG
- 2004–2009: McDonald's LPGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola
- 2010: LPGA Championship presented by Wegmans
- 2010–2014: Wegmans LPGA Championship
- 2015-: KPMG Women's PGA Championship
Controversial professionals - amateurs
Before 2005, the LPGA Championship was strictly a professional tournament . This was in contrast to the US and British Open , both of which have long been open to both professionals and amateurs.
The LPGA Championship is an event of the LPGA that was founded to offer women a chance, especially in women's professional golf . In 2005, this rule was lifted to allow the still amateur Michelle Wie to participate, thus increasing media coverage and selling more tickets - even if the LPGA did not publicly admit this. Some pros opposed this move, arguing that the amateurs would be participating at the expense of the less successful LPGA Tour pros who played regularly. Marked Laura Davies as one of the leading professionals the rule change as shortsighted.
In 2006 the LPGA Championship was held as a purely professional tournament again. Michelle Wie competed as a professional after signing million dollar deals with Nike , Sony, and other sponsors in October 2005 .
