Locations of the clubs of Division I for the 2016/17 season
The Division I (the Women's National Ice Hockey League ) is the third stage since the preseason after the Elite League and the Premier League of English and British woman Hockey League. It is divided into a north and a south group. The number of participating teams continued to decrease. The Kingston Diamonds B-team had risen and the Invicta Dynamos had withdrawn.
In the final tournament, the two best of the two groups played across the board for victory in Division 1. The winners of the northern group, the Billingham Lady Stars , did not take part in the playoffs, which resulted in the Coventry Phoenix moving up.
