The Vysschaja Liga 1979 was the 42nd season of the highest Soviet football league. It began on March 24th and ended on November 25th, 1979.

Spartak Moscow won the Soviet football championship for the tenth time by two points ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Pachtakor Tashkent crew was killed on August 11, 1979 in an airplane accident. In the following three years, the club was to be spared relegation, according to the decision of the Soviet Football Association.
