The Westdeutsche Zeitung (WZ) is a regional subscription newspaper . It has been published since 1887. Its motto is "Westdeutsche Zeitung - independent, critical, non-partisan". The daily newspaper is the publisher West German newspaper GmbH & Co. KG published and is headquartered in Wuppertal . Further locations are Düsseldorf and Krefeld .

Its distribution area is in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia , from Wuppertal via Düsseldorf and Krefeld to the Dutch border, where around four million people live. The main focus is on local and regional reporting around the distribution area.

The sold circulation is 57,003 copies, which are distributed over three regions or eight local editions, including u. a. Mettmann or Neuss. WZ has around 150 employees, around 70 of whom work in the editorial office. The supraregional, editorial cover section has been purchased externally since April 2020 by the Westfälische Nachrichten in Münster and also supplied to the Solinger Tageblatt and the Remscheider General-Anzeiger . There is also a cooperation with the Rheinische Post , from which local content is obtained for the smaller marginal editions, but which also receives content from the WZ. The WZ is printed in the Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei.

Edition

In the past few years, the Westdeutsche Zeitung has lost a lot of its circulation . The circulation sold has fallen by an average of 7.1% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 7.3%. It is currently 57,003 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 86.6 percent. The reach is 302,000 readers per issue (according to media analysis 2017).

The WZ has a unique position in Wuppertal with a sold circulation of 28,778 copies. In Krefeld it is the largest subscription newspaper with 19,063 copies sold, and in Düsseldorf (9,162 copies) it is the second largest subscription newspaper .

history

In 1876 the General-Anzeiger was founded for Düsseldorf and the surrounding area , and in 1887 Kommerzienrat Wilhelm Girardet published the first edition of the General-Anzeiger for Elberfeld-Barmen . In 1903 he and his son Paul took over the General-Anzeiger for Düsseldorf and the surrounding area , which had been published since 1876, and which they continued from 1917 under the new title Düsseldorfer Nachrichten . From 1905 to 1909, the Girardet publishing house in Düsseldorf was built on a corner plot of land on Königsallee (today WZ-Center, Königsallee 27–31) based on designs by Hermann vom Endt.

From 1934 the General Anzeiger appeared in Krefeld , which was first published in 1876 by Edmund Busch-du Fallois, and the Crefelder Zeitung (at least since 1855) under the common title Westdeutsche Zeitung . In 1936 Hellmut Girardet, Wilhelm Girardet's second son, took over the General-Anzeiger for Elberfeld-Barmen .

In 1937, the General-Anzeiger für den Niederrhein , the Niederrheinisches Echo newspaper , the Viersener Zeitung , the Linksrheinische Rundschau and Die Wacht am Rhein also belonged to this network under the subtitle United Daily Newspapers on the Lower Rhine .

With the end of the Second World War , the Düsseldorfer Nachrichten ceased its publication.

In 1949 the Westdeutsche Zeitung appeared again for the first time after the end of the war. Westdeutsche Zeitung and Düsseldorfer Nachrichten merged, the Westdeutsche Zeitung took over political pages from Düsseldorf. Local and advertising pages were created in Krefeld and the newspaper was also printed there. 1970 the publishing house C. Busch-du Fallois Söhne was taken over by the publishing house W. Girardet, new editor was Michael Girardet. As a result, the Westdeutsche Zeitung from Krefeld now also belonged to the publisher. Since 1973, all three of the publisher's newspapers have been published under the common heading Westdeutsche Zeitung .

Girardet-Verlag has a direct 6.7% stake in Rheinische Post Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, the holding company of Rheinische Post . Although both newspapers are competitors in the Düsseldorf area, they cooperate: The Rheinische Post prints the Westdeutsche Zeitung in its own Rheinisch-Bergische printing house, the Rheinische Post also organizes the distribution and both newspapers publish joint advertising papers.

At the end of 2009, around 300 journalists were working for the Westdeutsche Zeitung; at the end of 2012 there should be just under 200. The managing director justified the associated terminations with the media change. The circulation fell by over 36 percent within ten years.

At the end of March 2014 it was announced that the number of editors would be halved to 50. The local editions for the district of Mettmann, on the Lower Rhine and Neuss, so far created by the WZ, are to be obtained from the Rheinische Post in the future. The Westdeutsche Zeitung has been publishing news on the Internet since 1999 . In addition to the online portal wz.de, there is also a distribution channel under the keyword wznewsline . Publishing holdings

Among other things, the company has a stake in the Düsseldorf-Express publishing house, which appears Mondays to Saturdays and, together with WZ, has a sold circulation of 67,840 copies, in the program magazine Prisma and various radio stations in the distribution area. Media project Texthelden

With the media project "Texthelden" the newspaper addresses the schoolchildren in the circulation area of ​​the WZ. Participating classes receive the daily newspaper in class size delivered to their school for four or six weeks. Texthelden strengthens the competent use of print and online media and trains students in grades 3 to 10 to read and write. With Texthelden they learn to orient themselves in the various media, to research information, the language of the newspapers to understand, to classify news and to form your own opinion on this basis. In addition, the media project motivates the students to write their own articles and find themselves in the newspaper.
