RPWL is a music group from Freising . The name of the band is composed of the first letters of the first line-up of the musicians. Founding members are: Phil Paul Risettio (drums), Chris Postl (bass), Kalle Wallner (guitar) and Yogi Lang (vocals and keyboard). The music of RPWL is most likely to be assigned to progressive rock or art rock .

history

The band emerged from the group "Violet District", to which Kalle Wallner and Chris Postl as well as the later band member Stephan Ebner belonged and in which Yogi Lang was a producer and guest musician. After the RPWL founding members had played together in a nameless band in 1996, RPWL was in 1997 when Pink Floyd - cover band founded. It was helpful for this that the voice of Yogi Lang is very similar to that of the Pink Floyd lead singer David Gilmour . However, RPWL quickly developed its own style and released 15 albums so far. Certain influences of the music of Pink Floyd can still be recognized today.

After the first line-up of the group had released the album God Has Failed in 2000 , the band name was already obsolete , since with Chris Postl the "P" left the band. He was replaced by Stephan Ebner. In addition, Andreas Wernthaler joined the group as the second keyboardist. With this line-up, the albums Trying to Kiss the Sun (2002) and Stock (2003) were recorded. Then the line-up changed again. In addition to Andreas Wernthaler, Phil Paul Risettio and with it the "R" left the band. The latter was replaced by Manni Müller as the new drummer. This formation recorded the 2005 album World Through My Eyes , on which Stiltskin and ex- Genesis singer Ray Wilson took over the vocal part of the song Roses . The album is available both as a conventional audio CD and as a hybrid SACD .

On the subsequent European tour, founding member and returnees Chris Postl took over bass from Stephan Ebner. Chris Postl had never lost contact with the group and was involved in all albums released after his departure as a guest musician. The group received additional support during the tour from keyboardist Markus Jehle, who had been the group's permanent tour keyboardist until he became an official member of the band in 2009. In October 2005 the double live album Start the Fire with material from the tour, on which the band u. a. appeared at the WDR - Rockpalast . Ray Wilson also works as a guest singer on the live album. Additional songs from the tour were released on album 9 in 2007. Modeled on Pink Floyd's Ummagumma album, 9 contains a live half with songs by the band and a studio half with a composition by each band member.

In 2008 the album The RPWL Experience was released . After the album was released, the line-up changed again. Manni Müller's successor on drums was Marc Turiaux. In 2009, the group released recordings of the Experience tour under the title The RPWL Live Experience , which were released on double CD, DVD and combined CD / DVD box.

In 2010 the album The Gentle Art of Music was released on the band's new label Gentle Art of Music for the 10th anniversary of the band's first album release. Ray Wilson can be heard again as a guest singer. The album is a double CD, the first CD is a best-of, the second CD contains old songs in a new - acoustic - guise with numerous guest musicians. In 2010 the ribbon carousel turned again. The band and bassist Chris Postl split up again for personal reasons. He is succeeded by the Austrian bass player and singer Werner Taus.

In 2012 the band released their first concept album, Beyond Man and Time , which was released both as a normal version and as a limited bonus edition with audio book. The concept is a musical journey through the world outside of Plato's cave.

On February 22, 2013 in RPWL have Katowice , Poland , a "Beyond Man and Time" can be recorded -Show for a live DVD and double live CD, which in September 2013 under the title A show Beyond Man and Time have appeared .

On March 14, 2014 the album Wanted was released, which is also a concept album and is a continuation of the album Beyond Man and Time . It is available in three versions - as a single CD, as a “Limited Edition” CD + DVD with 5.1 audio surround mix and as a vinyl double album. On the occasion of the album's release, the band released an official music video for their first single, Swords and Guns , which, according to the band, "shows how the album's story began hundreds of years ago".

The band has focused on releasing live albums in recent years; three of the four last albums released contain only live recordings. In addition, on October 31, 2015, the band recorded a Wanted show entitled A New Dawn for a later DVD release. The show was a mixture of rock concert, multimedia event and theater performance. In addition to the musicians themselves, around 50 actors and extras were involved. It was released on July 14, 2017 on Blu-ray Disc, DVD, double CD and triple LP. It rose to number 100 on the German album charts and number 10 on the German music video charts.

On March 22, 2019, the band released the album Tales from Outer Space , which was also released as a limited fan box.

Pink Floyd cover band

Although the band has its own style and can no longer be called a Pink Floyd cover band, a connection to the music of Pink Floyd still exists today. On the album Stock with Opel there is a song by the first Pink Floyd head, Syd Barrett . During the existence of the band, songs by Pink Floyd appeared repeatedly in the band's live repertoire, as evidenced by the Pink Floyd songs Cymbaline and Welcome to the Machine on their live album from 2005. The live album from 2009 also contains two songs by Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, Opel and Biding My Time . Between August and October 2009, the group even played several concerts at which, without exception, songs by Pink Floyd were played; the setlist - supplemented by the song Biding My Time - corresponded to the one from Pink Floyd's "In The Flesh" tour from 1977. In addition, the band played on three occasions in 2014 - u. a. at Burg-Herzberg-Festival - Pink Floyd Special concerts, half of which consisted of lesser known songs by Pink Floyd. During their Fall 2015 tour, the band also performed the Pink Floyd concept show The Man and the Journey from 1969. In addition, the band released the album RPWL plays Pink Floyd on September 21, 2015 , which only contains live recordings of Pink Floyd tracks. Finally, the album RPWL Plays Pink Floyd's 'The Man and the Journey' for the 2015 show was released on October 28, 2016 .
