The ZIL-112S ( Russian ЗИЛ-112С ) was a racing car from the Soviet manufacturer ZIL from the 1960s and the successor to the ZIS-112 . It was used in national races in the Soviet Union. Only two pieces were built.

history

Vehicle number 1

Work on the project to manufacture a successor to the ZIS-112 began as early as 1957 and 1958. In 1961 the first car was finally ready. It had a V8 ZIL-111 gasoline engine, which was taken from the passenger car of the same name . The engine delivered 240 hp (177 kW) at 4000 revolutions per minute. As with all later versions of the car, a mechanical transmission with three forward gears was used. The design of the fiberglass body was based on the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa . The rear axle was designed as a De-Dion axle , and the vehicle had independent suspension at the front. The chassis was not changed over the entire period.

In the following year (1962) the first revision of the racing car took place. A closed body was put on, which not only lengthened the vehicle by 800 millimeters, but also made it higher by 435 millimeters. The top speed of the car increased from 260 km / h to 270 km / h.

After two years (1964), due to changed regulations, a GAZ-13 V8 petrol engine with only 200 HP (147 kW) and reduced displacement from the GAZ-13 sedan was installed. This change was discarded by 1967 and a V8 petrol engine of the new type ZIL-114 (also taken from the car of the same name ) was installed. With a displacement increased to almost seven liters, this now developed 270 hp (199 kW). From this point in time at the latest, the vehicle was fitted with disc brakes instead of drum brakes.

Vehicle number 2

In 1963 a second vehicle was ready, which was also equipped with a V8 ZIL-111 gasoline engine that also developed 240 hp (177 kW). This second example, like variant number 1, was built in 1961 with an open body. However, a triangular roll bar was added behind the driver, which enables a visual differentiation. This vehicle had disc brakes from the start.

In 1965 the ZIL-114 engine was used, which accelerated the vehicle to a top speed of 270 km / h.

Whereabouts

From 1969 both cars were still used for drag races. In 1977 an association in Riga bought both cars, which was then rebuilt and used. In 1989 it was given to a vehicle museum, which however did not exhibit it. Instead, it went to a Swedish car collector in 1993, where, as far as we know, it is awaiting restoration.

Vehicle number 2, shown in the pictures here, is exhibited in a vehicle museum in Riga.
