geography
Geographical location
Volketswil is located in the center of the canton of Zurich and, at 14.00 km 2 , is the fourth largest municipality in the district after Maur , Egg and Uster . Volketswil is located in the upper Glattal , at the gateway to the Zurich Oberland , between Dübendorf and Uster, north of the Greifensee . The hamlets of Hegnau, Zimikon, Kindhausen and Gutenswil belong to the community. Volketswil is 12 kilometers from Zurich by air .
The neighboring communities of Volketswils are Wangen-Brüttisellen , Dübendorf , Schwerzenbach , Greifensee , Uster in the Uster district and Fehraltorf , Illnau-Effretikon , Lindau in the Pfäffikon district in a counterclockwise direction from the north .
Municipal area
The largest part of the municipal area is taken up by agricultural land, which comprises 42.3 percent. Another 24.5 percent is forest, 22.4 percent settlement area, 9.9 percent traffic area and 0.2 percent water.
geology
The village of Volketswil fits in between the two moraine hills Hutzlen and Homberg, which were created by the Linth glacier. The landscape is slightly sloping towards Hegnau-Dammboden Zimikon. Hegnau is a typical street village : the road route of the national road Schwamendingen – Uster – Hinwil leads right through Hegnau. Today Hegnau is divided by the A53 . The Zimikon part of the village is located in a former reed area of the Greifensee. The villages Gutenswil and Kindhausen are located on hills.
The Linth Glacier not only shaped the terrain, but also deposited rubble and gravel and formed gravel deposits. Gravel mining was of great importance in Volketswil in the 20th century. In the meantime, some gravel mining areas have disappeared, but various mining areas still shape the area today.
history
Between 3000 BC BC and 1800 BC BC, during the Neolithic Age , the area around Volketswil was probably settled. The discovery of a bronze sword in Zimikon indicates that this area was also settled in the Bronze Age. Coin finds in Volketswil and the ruins of a villa built according to a Roman model on the «Hutzlen» bear witness to the settlement around Volketswil during the Roman Empire .
The Alemanni immigrated between 400 and 500 AD . Most of the names of today's villages probably come from this period (for example: Zimikon was called Ziminghovun, which means "at the court of the man Zimo"). Village names with the ending «wilare» originated in the 6./7. Century. In 904, Volketswil was first mentioned in a document as Folcharteswilare in a donation to the St. Gallen monastery . In the 14th century, a chapel, later the Reformed Church, was built, which is dedicated to St. Agatha.
In 1402 the city of Zurich bought the rule of Greifensee with Hegnau, in 1424 the rule of Kyburg with Volketswil, Gutenswil, Zimikon and Kindhausen. In 1638, Volketswil's own parish was founded. In 1767 Gutenswil was reallocated from Uster to the parish of Volketswil. The reformed church was therefore expanded with an extension (“Gutenswil Church”) on the west side. During the Helvetic Revolution in 1798, Volketswil was a new part of the Uster district (1815–1831 briefly Oberamt Greifensee) in the newly created canton of Zurich. A year later, 5,000 Imperial Russian soldiers marched through the village of Volketswil during the chaos of the Helvetic war.
In a village fire in Gutenswil in 1803, 205 people lost their belongings. The Volketswil double murder took place in 1859. A plaque on the north side of the old cemetery commemorates this event. Due to the crisis in home weaving in 1900, the population of Volketswil decreased to 1,515. In 1932, the five villages of Volketswil, Hegnau, Zimikon, Kindhausen and Gutenswil became part of the Volketswil community. A federal court decision in 1967 led to the zoning of the "Sunnebüel" area. A building boom was triggered. The Göhner development “Sunnebüel” was built in 1968.
In 1956 the reformed church was torn down to the ground and replaced by a new building. Only the pews and the pulpit still bear witness to the old church.
The construction boom resulted in various infrastructure buildings:
- 1968: Inauguration of the “Hellwies” primary school.
- 1969: The “ Waro ” supermarket chain opens the first large consumer market in Switzerland in Volketswil, whose Cash & Carry concept originates from the USA.
- 1970: Opening of the "Waldacher" swimming pool.
- 1971: Commissioning of the Neuwies cemetery complex. Construction of the provisional Catholic parish center "Brother Klaus", which was later expanded into a permanent church.
- 1972: Inauguration of the "Feldhof" primary school.
- 1973: Opening of the Volketswil center with various specialist shops, post office and community library.
- 1974: Inauguration of the “Lindenbüel” secondary school.
- 1984: Opening of the “Volkiland” shopping center in the Zimikon district.
In 2003 the comprehensive school "In der Höh" was inaugurated. The architecturally outstanding building was considered the most modern school building in the canton of Zurich until 2009. In 2004 Volketswil celebrated its 1100th birthday with a large village festival.
In 2008 the new sports facilities in Gries were put into operation and the Dorfbach exposed. The "Gries" development and the Griespark, which was inaugurated in 2009, were created. In 2014 the new parish hall was completed and handed over to the population.
