history

Former post mill between Zwietow and Gosda

Zwietow was laid out as a dead end village. It was first mentioned as Schwieto in 1403, three days before the feast of St. Bartholomew . It was mentioned together with Weißag in connection with the old mill . The name is probably derived from the Lower Sorbian Swet , which means world . In topographical terms, this may have meant clearing in the past . In the 18th and 19th centuries the place was called Schwieto , Schwitto and Zwieto . The village belonged to the Köckritzer family in Drebkau . Since Zwietow and Weißag are close together, it was assumed that they originally formed one place. After the alleged separation, the village of Zwietow was referred to as the second with the Sorbian word Dwaj . The villages of Zwietow, Gosda and Weißag are also called Plinsdörfer .

There is evidence that Zwietow was parish in Calau from 1718. In addition to the old mill, Zwietow also had the fox mill from the 15th century and a post mill that stood on a hill between Zwietow and Gosda. The Old Mill had to grind buckwheat for the Dobrilugk Monastery .

As a result of the Congress of Vienna , Zwietow came to the Kingdom of Prussia . The place belonged to the Prussian district of Calau . After the Second World War , the place remained in the newly founded district of Calau in 1952 and was incorporated into Gosda on September 1, 1950. On March 31, 2002, Gosda with its locations Zwietow and Weißag merged with Buchwäldchen, Muckwar and Schöllnitz to form the municipality of Luckaitztal.

Culture and sights

The old mill in Zwietow, which is still functional today, was first mentioned in 1403. It is a buckwheat, grain and cutting mill. It has been owned by the Seidel family since 1850. Until 1960 the grinding and cutting mechanism was driven by a water wheel each, after which they disintegrated. Today the mill is operated electrically. It is planned to operate the mill with water power again.

In the village there is a war memorial on the main street in front of an old oak tree.
