Districts of Andhra Pradesh.

For the city information, see Chittoor.

Chittoor pronunciation (Telugu :చిత్తూరు), also known as Chittur, is a city and district of India's Andhra Pradesh state. The city has a population of 152,966 (2001 census). Chittoor district is famous for the Tirupati, Kanipakam and Sri Kalahasti temples. It lies in the Poini River valley of southernmost Andhra Pradesh, on the Bangalore-Chennai highway. It is a market center for mangos, grain, sugarcane, and peanuts. Its industries include oilseed and rice milling. It is also home to Nutrine Confectionaries, a major chocolate manufacturer in India.

Geography

The district is bounded by Anantapur District to the northwest, Cuddapah District to the north, Nellore District to the northeast, Tamil Nadu state to the south, and Karnataka state to the southeast. The district has an area of 15,359 km² and population of 3,745,875 of which 21.65% were urban as of 2001. [1] Mango and tamarind groves surround the city of Chittoor, and cattle are raised in the district.

Formation

Chittoor District was formed in 1905, dividing the then Kadapah, Nellore and North Arcot districts.

Many famous personalities like Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Sir C.R. Reddy, P. Chinnamma Reddy Ex-MLA of Chittoor, Chittor V. Nagaiah, Bhasyam Vinod Kumar, L.M.Sandeep and others hail from this district.

Tourist attractions

  • Tirupati temple is the most visited and richest temple in India, often receiving 200,000 visitors a day.
  • Narayanavanam Temple is the anthor famous temple of the chittoor district. It is 35 Km to chittoor headquarters .
  • Horsley Hills, formerly called Enugu Mallamma Konda, is a summer resort located near the town of Madanapalle. It is known to some as the "Andhra Ooty". Madanapalle is the center of an agricultural region noted for its fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes. It is also famous for its hospitals, such as the T.B. Sanatorium located at Arogyavaram 5 km from Madanapalle. Rishi Valley, near Horsely Hills and 21 km from Madanapalle, is noted for its residential education Gurukula. One of India's greatest philosopher, Jiddu Krishnamurti chose this site to set up his Jiddu Krishnamurti Foundation as well as Rishi Valley School, one of India's oldest boarding schools.
  • A zamindari family in northern Andhra Pradesh (in the West Godavari region), the Chitturis, hail from this region.
  • Gurramkonda, in the western part of the district, is an historic center, with an old fort and a sultan's palace called the Rangini Mahal. Other notable places in the district are Gandikota, Jyothi, Pushpagiri, Ardhagiri, Chandragiri, Vontimitta, Thondavada, Tirupati, Kalahasti, Narayanavanam, Srinivasa Mangapuram and Tiruchanur.
  • The District Government Hospital in Chittoor was an administrative centre at some point in time. I believe there was small fort too. Until mid 1970s there was a moat surrounding the hospital and like many other things it has gone into history.
  • The current PCR Govt. Junior college has a history of over 150 years. The founder of this collage is P. Chinnamma Reddy Ex-MLA of Chittoor. It is one of the first high schools of the region. The colonial structure with pillars was very graceful for a long time. Currently the buildings lost all the old charm and in a state of disrepair.
  • There are many a colonial structures in town. The District Collector's bungalow is one. This huge palatial building is situated in a large piece of land which had an irrigation well and well maintained lawn. We can see cemeteries of the old pets of the British Raj’s District Collectors. The District Judge’s bungalow was a large and majestic one too. However, it got converted into Krishnaveni Women’s college and was later demolished. The other colonial buildings worth mentioning are the Collector’s office, Police Head Quarters and the District Court. However, they are pretty much in ruins for lack of proper maintenance. The Masonic building near the sports stadium too is a significant structure though very few know its history.
  • Before the advent of private schools B.Z.High School was a top choice for the students of Chittoor. It boasted of the best Math Department for a very long time. It was also unique with the fact that it had three mediums (Telugu, Tamil and English) of instruction. Historically current PCR Junior College (Govt. High School of the old) is a popular institution having educated the generations which fought for Independence. It is sad that it fell into bad times and the quality of education went down the hill. Little Flower High School is one of the older Missionary schools which made mark on the town. Krishnaveni Junior College is also a popular educational institute on the name of P.krishnaveni wife of P. Chinnamma Reddy Ex-MLA of Chittoor.B.S. Kannan Junior College is also a popular educational institute.
  • This District has been developing in area of Industrialisation (Chittoor, Tirupati, Gajulamandyam, Renigunta), Tourisim (Chandragiri, Madhanapalli, Tirupati), forestry (Tirupati, Satyavedu, Madanapalli, Mamanduru, Chandragiri),literacy and Infrastructure vide.
  • Apart from Telugu, Tamil language is also spoken in Chittoor.
