AEL club founded: 1930

Arena nickname:Το κλουβί(The Cage)

AEL is from the founding members of Cyprus Basketball Federation. With coach one of the schoolteachers of the sport in Cyprus, Michalaki Nikolaidi, the AEL began coward-coward with the beginning of official championships in 1967. It is established as the “queen” of Cyprus Basketball. Beyond the 13 championships, the 7 Cups and the 4 Super Cups that gained, AEL is also the only Cypriot team that ever took part at the Europe Cup. On 2007, for the fifth (5th) consecutive year, EKA AEL Lemesos have won the Cyprus championship. EKA AEL has become the first team in the Cyprus league to win five (5) titles in a row.

European Compaigns

In 2003 the “queen” wore also her European crown after she accomplished she conquers at the newly established Regional Challenge Cup (South Conference). There was a triumph that was completed with the astonishing record 10 victories in games equal in number. a That was the beginning of the European success of AEL Limassol which continues until today. After winning the Regional Challenge Cup, AEL participated as Cypriot champions the following year in the new FIBA EuroCup and qualified from the group phase in the round of 16. In the Group phase, AEL eliminated teams like Peristeri and Paris Basket Racing. They were eliminated in the round of 16 by Hapoel Tel Aviv. They were very close to do the same achievement in the same competition in 2004-05 but in 2005-06, when the competition changed formation AEL achieved to pass the first group round by finishing second, eliminating PAOK BC and Kallev Tallin and reached the second round (round of 16) where they finished last in their group.

The effort to reach the in 2004 and 2006, it was achieved in 2006-07 eventhough that this time AEL had tougher opponents than the previous years. Being in the same group at the first round with former European Champions Virtus Bologna, the famous ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne and the Astronauts Amsterdam, very few would believe that AEL had chance to qualify. However, those expectations didn't become truth and after the surprise victory against Virtus Bologna with a score 88-83. Also at home they crushed the french giants Villeurbanne 84-58 and at the end with four victories and two defeats, AEL qualified as second to the second round elimiting Villeurbanne.

Unlike the previous year, when AEL finished with 0 points in the second round, being in the same group with CB Estudiantes, with the Liege Basket and BC Šiauliai, they finished second with 5 victories and 1 defeat same with the pioneering Estudiantes because of the matches between those teams. AEL beat Estudiantes 63-62. AEL reached the quarter finals but the dream to reach the final four didn't become truth after they were eliminated by the Ukrainian team Azovmash 2-1 in victories. AEL won at home 85-79 but was beaten away 88 - 63 and 97 - 69. DTL EKA AEL finished unbeaten at Home

Defunct Sports departments

Except the currently active departments, AEL had in the past some other departments, which today are defunct. However, even as not active departments, the years they existed, all of them added titles for AEL.

In the past the AEL Limassol had a field hockey team which is currently not active. The team had plenty of victories by having its player Renos Antoniadis leading the team. In 1931, AEL won the Cup in a match which was played in Larnaca. One year later, the team became Cypriot Champions. The team was consisted by Antoniadis, Pareas, Frangos, Christophides, Michaelides, Kalogirou, Victor Mousteris, Anastasiadis and Williamson. However, there were no more competitions after, because the other teams of those years folded their hockey departments because of financial problems.

Another AEL sport department that currently not exist is the handball. The team was active for small period but that was not problem for the team to add another trophy in the hundred that they have by other various sports. On June 11, 1989, a day after the football team of the club won the Cyprus Cup, the handball team won the Cyprus Cup in handball by beating Youth Centre Larnaca 23-19 in the final which was played in Lefkotheo Indoor Hal, Nicosia.

Another ΑΕΛ sport department that currently not exist is the mens Volleybal team

In sea sports, AEL had reach activities, in those who could be competed via clubs. AEL pioneered in Regattas in 1932, 1933 and 1934 in the Cyprus Regatta Games. The members of the team were Nearchos Pieris, Christakis Dixon, Andreas Araouzos, Sotiris Antoniades and Maximos Morides. The club had also a waterpolo team which was uncompetent and unbeaten Cypriot Champions. The team achieved a noted victory against a selected team of British Navy which were Mediterranean Champions. Except the Cypriot Championships, AEL won the Mediterranean Naval Cup.
