APOEL Nicosia ( Greek. : ΑΠΟΕΛ - Aθλητικός Ποδοσφαιρικός Όμιλος Eλλήνων Λευκωσίας / Athlitikos Podosfairikos Omilose Ellinon Lefkosias , . Turk Lefkoşa Rum Atletik Futbol Kulübü, . Interpreting : Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Nicosia) is a football club from the capital of the Republic of Cyprus , Nicosia . The club currently plays in the first-class First Division and is the most successful club in the country with 28 championships, 21 cup wins and 14 Supercup wins.

history

The club was founded on November 8, 1926 , under the name POEL, in a candy store and was a founding member of the Cypriot Football Association. In 1928 the club was renamed APOEL.

In August 2009, APOEL celebrated one of its greatest successes in international football: after victories against EB / Streymur , FK Partizan Belgrade and FC Copenhagen , they made it into the group stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League against group opponents FC Chelsea and FC Porto and Atlético Madrid eliminated APOEL with three defeats and three draws as bottom group.

In August 2011, the club repeated their entry into the group stage of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League , having defeated KF Skënderbeu Korça , ŠK Slovan Bratislava and Wisła Krakow in the previous qualifying rounds . After victories over Zenit St. Petersburg and FC Porto , the club qualified early for the round of 16 on November 23, 2011 with a draw with the Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg. Due to the better record in a direct comparison against the club Zenit St. Petersburg with equal points, this was even achieved as group winners. In the round of 16, APOEL lost the first leg at Olympique Lyon 0: 1, but won the second leg 4: 3 (1: 0) on penalties and became the first Cypriot club to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Dionysis Chiotis became the match winner with two saved penalties against Lacazette and Bastos . In the quarter-finals, APOEL lost the first leg against Real Madrid 3-0. In the second leg, APOEL lost 5-2 and was eliminated from the competition.

pendant

The club is traditionally considered Panhellenic ; this results from the fact that the club sided with the anti-communists in the Greek civil war after the Second World War. To this day, the supporters of APOEL are considered right-wing conservative. Local rival is Omonia Nicosia , which split off during the civil war; Derbies are sometimes considered risk games. The supporters of Omonia are assigned to the left political camp.
