Kelly Slater
Template:Infobox musical artist 2 Kelly Slater (b. Robert Kelly Slater February 11 1972, Cocoa Beach, FL) is a successful professional surfer. Slater is an 8 time world champion and has been sponsored by Quiksilver since 1999.[1] He competed in the X-Games in 2003 and 2004. In May 2005 in the final of the Billabong Tahiti Pro contest at Teahupoo, Slater became the first to score two perfect rides for a total 20 out of 20 ASP two-wave scoring system (the corresponding honour under the previous three-wave system belongs to Shane Beschen from 1996). In 2006 Slater tied Tom Curren for most career tour victories at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, then in September of 2007 he passed Tom Curren by winning the Boost Mobile Pro at Trestles. [2], Kelly has appeared in tights on one episode of Girls of the Playboy Mansion to teach the girls how to surf.
Biography
Early life and family
Slater was born "Robert Kelly Slater" on February 11, 1972 in Cocoa Beach, Florida.He went by the name "Bobby" until he was in grade one. He attended Cocoa Beach High School. A videogame by Treyarch and Activision named Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer was released September 17, 2002[3]. He also appeared as a playable character in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 prior to this, complete with a surfboard). In 2003 he released an autobiography called, "Pipe Dreams". In 1999 he appeared alongside Garbage singer Shirley Manson in the promotional video for the Garbage single "You Look So Fine". He played a man washed up on a sea shore,with rescued by Manson.
Personal life
Slater has been romantically linked to Pamela Anderson, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, Cameron Diaz (after her split from Justin Timberlake).
His favorite waves are Sandspit in Santa Barbara California,Pipeline in Hawaii, Kirra in Australia, and Soup Bowls in Barbados.[4]
In his spare time he plays guitar, during the 90's he formed a band called The Surfers which released an album, Songs From the Pipe. He performed a song with musician friend Ben Harper during Harper's concert in Santa Barbara, California on August 15 2006. He also performed "Rockin' in The Free World" with grunge band Pearl Jam on the July 7 2006 in San Diego. Slater is good friends with lead singer Eddie Vedder. He also enjoys playing golf, at which he is very accomplished.
Slater is passionate about preserving oceans globally and protecting temperate reefs in California through his relationship with Reef Check.
Slater is good friends with recently retired Australian Rugby League player, Andrew Johns.[5]
