Alternative Rock[1]

|Years_active = 1995 — present |Label = Roadrunner/Atlantic |Associated_acts = |URL = www.nickelback.com |Current_members = |Past_members = Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in Hanna, Alberta by Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Brandon Kroeger. Their hit single "How You Remind Me" from their third album, Silver Side Up reached the top on the Canadian Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, making them the third Canadian band to accomplish this, the first being The Guess Who with "American Woman", the second being Bachman-Turner Overdrive with "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet".[2]
Since their smash hit "How You Remind Me" in 2001, the band enjoyed major commercial success, but have been mostly critically panned. Nickelback has sold over 14 million albums in the United States and nearly 2 million albums in their native Canada. The band has sold almost 25 million records worldwide.[3]
The band has won nine Juno Awards, an American Music Award, an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film (Hero), and a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Rock Artist. The band was also nominated for seven Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards and twelve Juno Awards. On December 4, 2006, Nickelback won three Billboard Music Awards out of five nominations.
Nickelback's latest release, All the Right Reasons has already sold over 5.7 million albums in the United States and over 8 million albums worldwide, and has 5 music videos from the album, "Photograph", "Savin' Me", "Far Away", "If Everyone Cared", and "Rockstar".
NHL goalie Cam Ward, wore a goalie mask that has a Nickelback theme featuring the band members playing, and NHL goalie Jamie McLennan wears a mask that features the album artwork from Silver Side Up. Their cover of Elton John's song "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" featuring Kid Rock can also be heard every Saturday night during the intro of Hockey Night in Canada.
Nickelback plans to return to the studio to begin recording a new album that is scheduled for a November/December 2007 release.[4]
History
Criticism
In 2003, an internet meme known as "How You Remind Me of Someday" or "Nickelback to Back" was created to illustrate the similarities between the songs "How You Remind Me" and "Someday".[3] In response, bassist Mike Kroeger said to the Cleveland Free Times in a press conference, "I think that's remarkable for someone to notice that there is a hit quality. If all hits sound the same, then sorry. When you are a band that has a distinct style such as us or AC/DC, that happens. When you have a distinct style, you run the risk of sounding similar."[4] Although it should be noted that due to the length of the different songs, one had the tempo slowed down a little and the other was cropped so they would run in sequence.
The band walked off the stage in a middle of a song at the Ilha do Ermal festival in Portugal on August 19 2002. This was in response to rocks being thrown on the stage and singer Chad Kroeger being sprayed with a bottle of water while the band was performing. After Kroeger confronted the audience, a rock was thrown at the back of his head. (http://www.goyk.com/video.asp?path=1051)
