Section of Canada's Walk of Fame along Simcoe Street in Toronto

The Canada's Walk of Fame is a sidewalk in the Canadian Toronto , comparable to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles . It extends from Roy Thomson Hall on both sides along King Street around the Royal Alexandra Theater to Simcoe Street and was opened in 1998. In addition to actors, film producers and musicians, in contrast to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, athletes, writers and models , for example, are also honored at the ceremonies that take place once a year.

History and selection process

The idea for a Walk of Fame in Toronto came from the businessman Peter Soumalias in 1996, who initially suggested honoring celebrities of the city who earned their merit every year; This led to the project of creating a Canada's Walk of Fame for people from all over Canada based on the Hollywood model. Together with other partners from Toronto, Soumalias financed the first 13 star awards in 1998. Since then, the Walk of Fame in Toronto has become a tourist attraction.

In the annual selection process, which ends April 30th each year, nominations for the Walk of Fame can be submitted by any adult Canadian citizen. In the first few years this was done by letter, fax or email; today nominations are only accepted online via the project's official website.

According to the official selection criteria, the persons to be honored must

  • were born in Canada or who spent years in Canada that were essential for the creative qualities of their work;
  • have worked in their profession for at least ten years and have achieved generally recognized achievements and
  • Have made a significant contribution to Canada's cultural heritage nationally or internationally.

As part of the Canadian Legends Award , people who have already died have been taken into account since 2008.

From each of the several thousand nominations, a selection committee first makes a sorted preselection, which is then forwarded to the project's 15-member board for the final selection decision. Until 2010, between 7 and 13 people per year were selected in this way.

Similar to the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the floor slabs are made of old pink terrazzo . A circled star in the form of a stylized maple leaf (based on the maple leaf from the flag of Canada ), the name and signature of the person honored and a symbol of their activity are engraved on the plates; in the case of groups, only the group name is recorded (without listing the names of the members).

Up to and including 2010, 119 individuals and 12 groups were honored on the Walk of Fame. Unlike on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, individuals can only receive a star once, as there is no distinction between categories.
