Post-grunge is a collective term that was established in the mid-1990s for rock performers who followed the popular phase of grunge and, in part, stylistically refer to the representatives of grunge. Comparable to other formations with the prefix post- the hybrid position is indicated in which the post-grunge is: on the one hand, the music belongs to the grunge area, on the other hand, the music is characterized by further development and differentiation.

classification

The Allmusic website locates post-grunge as a stylistic reference to grunge without taking on the peculiarity of grunge. Tim Grierson from About.com uses a definition that is even further removed from grunge and describes post-grunge as a reaction to the success of grunge generated from hard rock , which only makes use of guitar playing and the opening up of content through grunge.

In the course of such a definition, post-grunge is also understood as the differentiation between successful representatives of grunge and the market-based use of this success by the music industry. Early exponents of post-grunge, such as Bush , Live , Candlebox and Collective Soul , are accused of adapting elements of style and fashion from grunge as a profit-oriented calculation. In this perspective, post-grunge is considered mainstream music that only uses the aesthetics of grunge.

Regardless of the evaluation of post-grunge as a continuation or commercial use of grunge, post-grunge is considered more catchy, radio-friendly and easier to market than grunge.

style

The Foo Fighters are among the most popular representatives of post-grunge

music

The post-grunge recordings are often of high quality. Post-grunge pieces are mostly arranged as mid-tempo pieces with the usual structure of verse, chorus and verse for pop music. A change from calm verse to energetic refrain is often sought. The guitar playing in post-grunge uses acoustic guitars as well as heavily distorted electric guitars, sometimes both are performed at the same time. Often the acoustic guitar is in the foreground in the verses, while the electric guitar is more present in the choruses. The singing is mostly performed by male musicians and changes from deep, melancholy , clear vocals in the stanzas to screaming , considered angry, in the chorus.

Texts

Compared to the interpreters of grunge, the texts are mostly written as subjectively personal descriptions, while grunge presented itself more with metaphorical texts. The often abstracting and ironic texts of the grunge interpreters gave way to individual expression of emotions in post-grunge. Socio-political and mostly personal topics are rarely presented in post-grunge.

history

Three Days Grace, here at Rock am Ring in 2015, belong to the late groups in the genre

In the mid-1990s, the heyday of grunge ended due to the increasing disintegration of the supporting performers. Alice in Chains canceled a tour, allegedly due to her singer Layne Staley's drug problems . Even Pearl Jam broke a tour and latest with Kurt Cobain's death, as the front man of Nirvana was considered a central figure of the genre, including the grunge was considered past.

During this period, when grunge dominated the charts at the same time but also increasingly collapsed as a scene, major label music groups released music groups that emulated grunge aesthetically and musically, but expanded the style in a pop-oriented manner. Bush , Live , Candlebox and Collective Soul , who were called grunge as well as post-grunge as interpreters of this wave, achieved high chart positions and thus built on the success of grunge. Sixteen Stone , the debut album by the Bush group, entered the top 100 of the German, British and American charts. Live, the single Selling the Drama was also placed in the top 100 in all three music markets. The album Throwing Copper reached the top 100 in the British and German charts and topped the American market. The group achieved a similar success with the follow-up album Secret Samadhi . Candlebox and Collective Soul reached the top ten in the American charts with albums and singles, but were unable to expand their success comprehensively internationally.

In the mid-1990s, a large number of successful interpreters appeared, who were attributed to post-grunge due to their aesthetics. From Matchbox Twenty to the Goo Goo Dolls , the Foo Fighters and Silverchair to Alanis Morissette , the term has become a synonym for lyrical or aesthetically similar developments in the spectrum of alternative rock .

Up to the present day there have been regular performers who were assigned to the style and recorded chart successes. Post-grunge established itself with such commercially successful groups as Chevelle , Alter Bridge , Creed , Three Days Grace , 3 Doors Down , The Calling , Puddle of Mudd , Staind , Audioslave , Incubus , Hoobastank , Nickelback , Seether , Shinedown , Cold and Flyleaf as a significant and lucrative style of rock music over the millennium. In the late 2000s, performers new and old continued to pick up the style, successfully combining it with new elements of pop and rock music. The success of new artists such as 12 Stones and 30 Seconds to Mars , some of whom referred to post-grunge, but also the development of old greats in the genre, especially those of Nickelback, Bush, the Foo Fighters, 3 Doors Down, Stone Sour (a side project of Slipknot singer Corey Taylor ) and Audioslave expanded the spectrum of post-grunge music from ballad pop rock to mainstream rock and classic hard rock to alternative metal influenced by hardcore punk .

Image and popularity

The more commercial, more pop-oriented, radio-friendly orientation of post-grunge ensured that it achieved considerable chart successes in North America, Europe and other parts of the world in the 90s and early to mid-2000s, and grunge always with it brought more into the mainstream . At the same time, this also led to a strong negative attitude towards this music among many fans of the original grunge and other harder and more alternative styles of rock. Nickelback, in particular, is often attacked and ridiculed on the Internet as an example of a heavily commercialized post-grunge band. The Daily Telegraph called them "the most hated band in the world" in this context.
