The following article is about the fifth season of Desperate Housewives, began airing September 28, 2008 on ABC. The fifth season is placed five years in the future, following the events of the season four finale.

Debut
For the first time, the season will begin airing in the United Kingdom on Channel 4 at approximately the same time as the United States, as confirmed by Channel 4 on their forum on May 28, 2008. Prior to this, the season premiere has aired approximately 3-6 months (3 months for seasons 1, 2 and 3 and 6 months for season 4) after its initial U.S. airing. It hasn't officially been confirmed by the Channel 4 website as yet, but as they are planning to air the episodes in the early Autumn, new episodes are expected to resume in August in order for the arrival of season 5 in late October. There will be no gap between the two seasons, except the usual week that separates the episodes. However, episodes are expected to be about 3-10 days behind the United States if E4 are to screen them first.

The UK debut of the season is scheduled for Sunday October 19, 2008 at 10:00pm on E4, and Wednesday October 22, 2008 at 10:00pm on Channel 4. The previous season's finale will have aired before, in two-parts on October 8 and 15 in single timeslots. This means that the Season 5 premiere will be the 9th consecutive episode in the 17 week long run of episodes in the UK. For the first time in its UK history, the new season will be released in advance of the previous season's DVD boxset. In the past, the DVD releases have been around 2-3 months before the next series debuts on TV, but due to the time constraints revolving around the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike and complications with the schedule, it is just a coincidence that this has happened.

Production
There had been much speculation about the fifth season of the show, due to the many cliffhangers at the end of season four, such as the departure of Edie Britt, and if she will return after the events of the "Mother Said" episode, when Edie suddenly packed up and left Wisteria Lane to spend more time with her son Travers. When asked about Sheridan's departure, Cherry commented "She won't be back for a few years". This may be a reference to the 'five-year leap' that the show is undertaking. When questioned about this, and asked whether Sheridan is still part of the show, Cherry said "I only address one rumor at a time. We'll have to wait until next season and see". Nicollette Sheridan, who plays Edie, later confirmed to return next season, and will also be bringing with her a new husband, Dave, played by Neal McDonough, who is joining the cast as a series regular.

There had also been speculation whether the character of Mike Delfino would return, after the final scene in season four, set five years into the future, which showed Susan in then new mystery man, Jackson's (Gale Harold's) arms. The fate of Mike Delfino was later revealed by actor James Denton, who plays Mike, when he told People magazine that he will definitely be returning in Season 5. However, "Mike and Susan have definitely split up," Denton told People.

Also joining the principal cast is actor Neal McDonough as Dave Williams, while new actors portray the Scavo children, such as Charlie Carver, Max Carver, Joshua Logan Moore and Kendall Applegate, who all receive an "also starring" credit.
