(9788) Yagami is an asteroid of the main outer belt , an asteroid field between Mars and Jupiter . The asteroid was discovered on March 11, 1995 by Japanese amateur astronomer Takao Kobayashi at the Oizumi Observatory ( IAU code 411). The Oizumi Observatory is located in Oizumi in Gunma Prefecture . The asteroid had been sighted before: on January 4, 1989 under the provisional designation 1989 AV 3 at the Australian Siding Spring Observatory and on August 6 and 14, 1991 (1991 PS 19 ) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile .

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 10.443 km (± 0.163) and the albedo to be 0.093 (± 0.020).

The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis . The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (9788) Yagami are almost identical with those of the three smaller (when one of the absolute brightness of 15.6, 16.5 and 17.0 versus 13.5 emanates) asteroid: (113098) 2002 RV 74 , (396983) 2005 SK 13 and (463346) 2012 QT 10 .

(9788) Yagami was named on August 29, 2015 after the Japanese singer-songwriter Junko Yagami (* 1958). In the dedication, special reference is made to her song Polar Star and to her relief efforts after the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 . The Yagami Fluctus, on the other hand, a solidified lava field in the southern hemisphere of Venus , was named after the Japanese earth goddess Yagami , wife of the god O-kuninusi .
