(I've Had) The Time of My Life is a song from the soundtrack to the movie Dirty Dancing . It was written by Franke Previte , John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz. In the interpretation of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes the song became a worldwide hit.
Emergence
Jimmy Ienner of the Millennium Label was hired to produce various songs for the film soundtrack for Dirty Dancing . He remembered Franke Previte, composer and songwriter for the band Franke & the Knockouts , with whom he scored a top ten hit on the American Billboard Hot 100 in 1981 with Sweetheart . Previte initially declined because he was involved in other projects, but then accepted. Jenner gave him the rough concept of the plot of the film and asked for a mambo piece that should start slowly and end quickly. Previte had never composed a mambo before, so he wrote the piece together with his friend, songwriter John DeNicola. The demo recording took place on an eight-track recorder in Donald Markowitz's New York apartment, who contributed some drum rhythms and chords to the composition. Jenner liked the instrumental demo and commissioned Previte to write lyrics for it. This was based on memories of Previte while driving through New York when he spontaneously remembered the line of text “the time of my life”.
The songwriter trio wrote another piece for the film Dirty Dancing with Hungry Eyes .
At first Previte wanted to sing the song himself, but Jenner had already decided on Bill Medley . After much back and forth, Medley was convinced to record the piece. The sessions were moved from New York to Los Angeles at his insistence because Medley's wife Paula was heavily pregnant and Medley didn't want to stray too far from her. For the female vocals, Jennifer Warnes was chosen . Medley later recalled that he had never met Warnes in person before, and yet it was the recording of his career that had taken the least time.
