Team spirit was developed by the adidas Innovation Team and Molten Corporation at Loughborough University and tested for the first time at the 2005 U-17 World Cup in Peru . The ball was officially presented at the final draw of the 2006 soccer World Cup in Leipzig on December 9, 2005.
The arrangement of 14 panels is intended to achieve an overall rounder structure than the conventional shape of twelve pentagons and 20 hexagons, which only deviates from an ideal sphere by 0.1%. A gold-colored version of the ball called + Teamgeist Berlin was used in the final .
