Úhorná ( Uhorná in Slovak until 1927 ; Ahorn in German , Dénes in Hungarian - Uhorna until 1902 ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia . It is located in the valley of the Smolník River in the Volovské vrchy Mountains , about 21 km from Rožňava , 31 km from Gelnica and 50 km from Košice . Above the village is the Úhorná pass ( Úhornianske sedlo , 999 m nm ), below a small reservoir built in the 18th century ( vodná nádrž Úhorná ).
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1383 as Ohary , as part of the rule of the Krásna Hôrka Castle . In the 16th century, Wallachians settled in the village.
Until 1918, Úhorná belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary within Gemer and Kleinhont counties , after which it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . Today the community is used as a " dacha community " in summer .
On August 3, 2003, a tragic accident occurred near the village when the engine of a coach that was traveling to a place of pilgrimage near the community on the narrow country road leading up to the village (designation: II / 549) switched off and as a result, because of a broken parking brake came off the road and fell down the valley; 13 (originally 11) people were killed and 24 (other information 25) injured.
