history

Historical photo of the village, 1938

Veľký Folkmar was first mentioned in writing in 1336 as Villa Volkmari and the inhabitants were employed as charcoal burners, miners and foresters. In the beginning it was a typical village where mostly subjects of the Jekelfalussy family lived. At the end of the 15th century the place was bought by the Zápolya family, so it became part of the great dominion of the Spis Castle .

Veľký Folkmar was originally a village inhabited by Slovaks and Germans, but has been a Slovak village since the 18th century. In 1828 there are 84 houses and 605 inhabitants.

In 1992, when a house was being renovated, a collection of 65 ducats from the 15th and 16th centuries was found. Today this treasure is kept in the East Slovak Museum in Košice.
