Għaxaq [ ˈɐːʃɐʔ ] (or Ħal Għaxaq ) is a village in the south of Malta with 4860 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is 4 miles from Valletta . The place has largely retained its village character; Agriculture and animal husbandry continue to determine the lives of hundreds of its residents. Until April 26, 1626 Għaxaq belonged to Żejtun . At that time the place had 340 inhabitants in 77 houses. The name of the village is probably derived from the "Axiaq" family ; the motto of Għaxaq called "Laeta Sustineo" (literally. "Heiter Empor hold" So mutatis mutandis probably "head high").
Around 1767 the population suddenly fell from over 1,000 to around 350. This was due to illnesses and Turkish raids along the Maltese coast.
The new parish church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary ( Assumption of Mary ). It was inaugurated on May 2, 1784 by Bishop Vincenzo Labini .
