11'09 ″ 01 - September 11 is an international episode film about the attack on the towers of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001 . It was produced by the French film producer Alain Brigand.

The producers asked eleven well-known filmmakers around the world to make a short film about the catastrophe and their impressions. The directors were not subject to any restrictions in terms of content or form. The only condition was the length of the post: it should be 11 minutes, 9 seconds and 1 picture. In the title, the spelling of a "filmmaker" - 11'09 ″ 01 - results in the date of the attacks in Manhattan ( New York City ).

The films in the compilation allow viewers to reflect on a wide variety of topics, political ideas and aesthetic concepts. In this way they simultaneously produce a complex picture of reality that tries to do justice to this topic and its manifold interpretations.

The individual episodes

Iran (Director: Samira Makhmalbaf )

In an Afghan refugee camp in Iran, a teacher tries to inform the children about the attack. However, when she asks if anyone knows anything about the great disaster, a boy tells of the man who fell into the well and died, and a girl tells of her aunt who was stoned. The teacher is unable to convey the meaning of the events to the children and they do not understand why they should observe a minute's silence.

France (Director: Claude Lelouch )

A deaf French woman lives in New York with a guide whom she wants to leave. While she is writing the suicide note, the towers collapse, which she does not notice because of her handicap. She only finds out that something has happened when she looks at her shocked, dust-covered friend.

Egypt (Director: Youssef Chahine )

A filmmaker reflects on the disaster through visions of a soldier and a suicide bomber.

Bosnia-Herzegovina (Director: Danis Tanović )

Women hold a demonstration every Monday to remember their missing husbands. On this day, however, this demonstration no longer seems to have any meaning.

Burkina Faso (Director: Idrissa Ouédraogo )

In the middle of Burkina Faso, a boy who urgently needs money for his sick mother and school attendance believes that he has seen the wanted Osama bin Laden. Because he and his friends want to secure the supposedly high bounty, they try to capture the man on their own.

Great Britain (Director: Ken Loach )

A dissident of the Chilean Pinochet Junta writes a letter from British exile to the American people, commemorating the overthrow of the democratically elected socialist Salvador Allende on September 11th. The American military played a key role in this fall, which was followed by a military dictatorship in Chile.

Mexico (Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu )

The television commentary is switched on an almost black screen and has a special effect due to the concentration on the acoustics.

Israel (Director: Amos Gitai )

There is a car bomb attack in Tel Aviv . A television journalist tries to broadcast it live, but then nobody cares anymore because there was also an attack in New York. The film was shot in a single take without editing.

India (Director: Mira Nair )

An American of Indian descent who disappeared after September 11th is suspected of being involved in the attack. His mother, who does not believe this, is cut from her surroundings until it is found that her son died a hero.

USA (Director: Sean Penn )

An old widower (played by Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine ) lives in the memory of his late wife. When the towers collapse and no longer cast shadows on the windowsill of his apartment, their flowers begin to bloom again.

Japan (Director: Shohei Imamura )

A Japanese man who fought as a soldier in World War II decides upon his return to his village to live the life of a snake instead of a human. In a flashback, he is humiliated on the battlefield by a comrade who speaks of "holy war".
