Roman Empire
- December 31 : The Roman Emperor Commodus , who fell out with the leading circles in Rome due to his dictatorial style of rule , is murdered by conspirators. At his court he is strangled in his bathroom by an athlete named Narcissus with the participation of his concubine Marcia .
Empire of China
- Minister Wang Yun and other court officials conspire against the warlord Dong Zhuo , who controls Emperor Xian . He persuades General Lü Bu , Dong Zhuo's adopted son, to murder his stepfather. After the attack, Dong Zhuo's confidants Li Jue and Guo Si seized power on Jia Xu's advice. They kill Wang Yun and chase away Lü Bu, who flees to Yuan Shu . There he is not welcomed and moves on to Yuan Shao , who provides him with troops. In the same year, Lü Bu went his own way with these troops.
- In the capital, Chang'an , Generals Guo Si, Li Jue and Fan Chou divide the city among themselves. Li Jue and Guo Si are willing to kill the emperor, but Fan Chou and officer Zhang Ji stop them. Fan Chou is later executed for letting the enemy officer Han Sui escape.
- Liu Bei , who fought the remaining Yellow Turban rebels with a small army , moves after a heavy defeat to the warlord Gongsun Zan , who lost the battle of Jieqiao to Yuan Shao last year . Gongsun Zan recognizes Liu Bei's worth and hires him to monitor the border with Yuan Shao's territory.
