action

The English shipyard worker Jude travels illegally to the USA in the 1960s , where he is looking for his father. He finds him as the caretaker of a renowned university. There he meets the bored student Max Carrigan, befriends him and falls in love with his sister Lucy. Max gives up his studies and moves with Jude to New York , where they rent a flat in Sadie's shared apartment and meet JoJo and Prudence. Lucy follows them.

After Max was drafted into the army and sent to the Vietnam War , Lucy becomes active in a group of peace activists, Jude tries to gain a foothold as a draftsman.

While Jude lets his pictures speak, Lucy joins a revolutionary group that is demanding ever more radical action against state power. Lucy and Jude become alienated as a result.

When the University of Columbia is forcibly taken over , Lucy is threatened by police officers, and the Jew who comes to her aid is arrested and deported. Max returns from Vietnam traumatized . After Jude left the United States and returned to Liverpool , he learns that some of Lucy's comrades in arms were killed by a homemade bomb.

Jude then decides to finally emigrate to the USA. He meets Lucy again at a “rooftop concert” held by his former landlady Sadie.

Reviews

Justin Chang wrote in Variety magazine on Sept. 11, 2007 that a love of the Beatles and the "psychedelic visual effects of the 1960s" was all it took to enjoy the film. He was "bold", "peculiar" and played with such conviction that one could not meet him with displeasure - even if it was difficult to take him seriously.

According to the lexicon of international films , the film is "a scenic, opulent, nostalgic journey through time with rousing musical numbers and performances by stars like Joe Cocker and Bono , in which the historically based subject is of course largely depoliticized."
