Air Algérie ( Arabic الخطوط الجوية الجزائرية, DMG al-ḫuṭūṭ al-ǧawwiyya al-ǧazāʾiriyya ) is an Algerian airline based in Algiers and based at Algiers Airport .

history

Air Algérie was founded in 1947 as Société Algérienne de Construction Aéronautique - Air Algérie . The company now holds 49% of Tassili Airlines . Extensive modernization work on the fleet, including new cabins, with a total volume of 400 million euros has been announced for 2011.

Destinations

In addition to numerous national and North African connections, Air Algérie serves a number of international destinations in Europe , Asia and North America . In German-speaking countries are Frankfurt , Geneva and Vienna served.

Air Algérie has codeshare agreements with Air Canada , Air China , Alitalia , Korean Air and Turkish Airlines, among others .

Incidents

From its establishment in 1947 to October 2017, Air Algérie suffered 19 total aircraft losses. In 8 of them, 309 people were killed. Examples:

  • On October 30, 1951, the right landing gear of a Sud-Ouest Bretagne owned by Air Algérie ( aircraft registration F-OAIY ) suddenly collapsed during take-off at Paris-Orly airport . The plane skid and caught fire. It was destroyed, but all 4 crew members and 30 passengers survived.
  • On July 26, 1969, a fire broke out in the electrical room of a Sud Aviation Caravelle 6N of Air Algérie (7T-VAK) during a charter flight from Marseille to Hassi Messaoud ( Algeria ). The pilots tried to reach Biskra airport for an emergency landing. However, the plane crashed in flames while approaching Ain Naga, 45 kilometers east-southeast of Biskra. Of the 37 occupants, only 4 crew members survived. All 30 passengers and 3 of the crew members were killed.
  • On January 24, 1979 a Nord 262A-44 of Air Algérie (7T-VSU) was flown into the ground on the approach to Bechar airport 15 kilometers from the destination. While the three-man crew survived, 14 of the 20 passengers were killed.
  • On August 1, 1989, it came with a Lockheed L-100-30 Hercules Air Algérie (7T-VKM) at the airport Tamanrasset Aguenar ( Algeria ) to a very hard landing, which in a Ringelpiez ended. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair. All four crew members survived.
  • On March 6, 2003, a Boeing 737-200 with the aircraft registration 7T-VEZ had an accident on the flight from Tamanrasset to Algiers due to an engine failure shortly after take-off. Of the 103 people on board, only one passenger survived the accident (see also Air Algérie flight 6289 ) .
  • On August 13, 2006, a Lockheed L-100-30 Hercules with the aircraft registration 7T-VHG crashed on the way from Algiers to Frankfurt near the Italian city of Piacenza after a loss of control following the failure of the autopilot. The 3 crew members did not survive the accident (see also Air Algérie flight 2208 ) .
