Airto Guimorvan Moreira (born August 5, 1941 in Itaiópolis , Brazil ) is a Brazilian percussionist who became known worldwide as a jazz musician . His merit with others is that in 1972 the renowned music magazine Down Beat introduced the new category Percussion . It established itself internationally as the name for this use of smaller percussion instruments, which was strongly influenced by Moreira at the time.

Live and act

Moreira grew up in Curitiba . He first learned the guitar and piano; at the age of six he appeared on the radio, at twelve he played in small bands. At the age of sixteen he went to São Paulo , where he formed the Trio Sambalanço with César Camargo Mariano and Humberto Clayber , then to Rio de Janeiro . In 1966 he was a member of the Trio Novo , accompanying Geraldo Vandré , among others . When Hermeto Pascoal joined in 1967 , it became the Quarteto Novo . In 1968 he left Brazil for political reasons , which had been a military dictatorship since 1964, and went to the United States with his wife, the singer Flora Purim .

Moreira played with some jazz musicians in New York. One of them, Joe Zawinul , introduced him to Miles Davis . Moreira then took part in a few sessions for his album Bitches Brew and also played live in the Davis Band in 1970 and early 1971, to be heard a. a. in the album Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West . Subsequently, he was one of Weather Report and Chick Corea's group Return to Forever . He has also worked on music recordings by Gato Barbieri , Herbie Hancock , George Duke , John McLaughlin , Joni Mitchell ( Don Juan's Reckless Daught , 1977), Carlos Santana , Mickey Hart and Billy Cobham . Together with his wife Flora Purim , he has mainly formed his own formations since 1990, the band "Fourth World" with José Neto and Gary Meek since 1990 .
