Albert Lester
Albert Lester (* around 1803 in Litchfield , Connecticut , † March 14, 1867 in Canandaigua , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).
Political career
Lester began his political career by being elected to the New York Senate , where he represented the 7th District from 1844 to 1847. At that time, in May 1847, the incumbent lieutenant governor of New York, Addison Gardiner , was elected to the New York Court of Appeals and took office on July 5. As a result, he resigned his post as lieutenant governor, which resulted in a vacancy , as the lieutenant governor is ex officio the Senate President. When the New York Legislature met for an extraordinary session between September 8 and December 15 , Lester was elected President pro Tempore in the Senate and was consequently acting lieutenant governor. He held the office until the end of the year. Urged by Governor John Young , the Legislature passed a law on September 27 to hold a by-election for the lieutenant governor to fill the vacancy. In the subsequent election, Hamilton Fish was elected, who took office on January 1, 1848.
Lester was buried in West Avenue Cemetery in Canandaigua after his death .
