Alo (unofficially also Tuʻa or Kingdom of Futuna ) is a kingdom on the Horn Islands and, like the kingdoms of Uvea and Sigave, is located in the French overseas territory of Wallis and Futuna . It covers the island of Alofi and about two thirds of Futuna . According to the Constitution of 1961, the three kingdoms are recognized by France .

area

The territory of the kingdom consists of two parts: one part is on the very sparsely populated island of Alofi and the other part consists of about two thirds of the island of Futuna , where almost all the villages of Alo are located. The other part of Futuna belongs to the Kingdom of Sigave .

In the northern central part of Futuna is the Mont Puke , which is a border point between Sigave and Alo. It is the highest point on the island and the kingdom of Alo. The mountain Kolofau lies on Alofi .

history

discovery

In May 1616, Futuna and Alofi were discovered by the Dutch navigators Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelisz Schouten . The French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville rediscovered the island group in 1768 and gave it the name Futuna (the lost child of the Pacific).

Development as part of France

In 1887, many Polynesian kings signed a protectorate treaty with France. So did the King of Alo. In 1961, after a referendum, Alo became part of the new French overseas territory of Wallis and Futuna.

population

In 2018 there were 1,948 people living in Alo. The population is decreasing, since in 2013 there were still 2,156 people and in 2003 even 2993 people. The decline is mainly due to the generally weak economy in Wallis and Futuna and the emigration for these reasons, e.g. B. to justify New Caledonia .

politics

The King of Alo , as a traditional monarch, is head of internal affairs in the kingdom. He appoints five ministers for the administration, headed by the Prime Minister of Alo . The villages in the kingdom have a village chief.

Administrative division

The kingdom is not divided into several districts , but forms only a single district, as in Sigave. Alo and Sigave each consist of only one district and Uvea of three districts, so that there are a total of five districts in Wallis and Futuna. The next administrative unit in Alo are the new villages:

Village Population (2013) island
Ono 537 Futuna
Taoa 531 Futuna
Kolia 309 Futuna
Vele 211 Futuna
Mala'e 192 Futuna
Poi 190 Futuna
Tamana 183 Futuna
Tuatafa 2 Futuna
Alofitai 1 Alofi

Infrastructure

air traffic

Futuna Pointe Vele Airport is located in the southeast of the island of Futuna . From there, Aircalin flights to Valais Hihifo Airport are offered several times a day . They are with turboprop aircraft of the type De Havilland Twin Otter Bombardier performed.

Road network

In Alo there are two territorial routes that connect most of the villages. Since the villages are only on the coast , the RT1 runs around the island of Futuna and thus also runs through Sigave. The short RT2 connects the airport with the RT1.

Shipping

There is no port for ships in Alo . That is why the port of Leava also serves as a port for Alo.

economy

The economy in Alo is weak. Most people still live relatively traditionally from subsistence farming like in the rest of Wallis and Futuna. French development funds are administered by the general government of Wallis and Futuna in Mata-Utu .
