The Amieira, Azenha and Bicanho thermal baths in the border area to the municipality of Samuel were an important economic factor from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, but were then abandoned and in some cases fell into disrepair. In the meantime there are partly public, partly private initiatives to revive them.

Every seventh of the month since 1843 there has been a locally important market in the central square of Largo Capitão Argel de Melo .

The Moinho das Marés (German: tide mill), also called Moinho das Doze Pedras (German: mill of the twelve stones), built in 1778, with its twelve millstones is considered unique on the Iberian Peninsula . It was first restored in 1986 and has been a listed building since 1990. It stands in the area of the Quinta do Canal (Eng .: estate of the canal), which is also a listed building. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, half of the estate belonged to the Seiça monastery until 1834, when the church property fell to the state after the Miguelist Wars . The other half belonged to the Jesuits until 1759 , when the Marquês de Pombal, at the behest of his king, gave it to his deserved advisor José de Seabra da Silva. This built u. a. Wine store, oil mill and granary, and managed the estate. In 1898 it was sold to the private citizen José Gonçalves Santiago, whose family is still the owner today. Its extensive landscapes are ideal for walks.

Built in 1965, the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Saúde (German: Parish Church of Our Lady of Health) and dedicated to the devotion of Mary. The chapel Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde is popularly called Igreja Velha (German: Old Church) and contains a representation of Mary in wood and representations of historical abbots. There is also an old crib in it. The figure of Mary is a copy, the original of which was brought to the parish church.

The music association Sociedade Musical Recreativa de Alqueidão, founded in 1927, with its orchestra, the Filarmónica do Alqueidão , is an important cultural motor of the community, as is the cultural association Associação Cultural do Alqueidão , whose folk dance group Rancho Típico do Alqueidão performed nationally and internationally.

The Piscina do Alqueidão

Since its opening by the then district mayor Pedro Santana Lopes in 2001, the municipality has had an outdoor swimming pool, the Piscina do Alqueidão .

The Casa do Povo is important for community life , not least because of its football and futsal teams.

Alqueidão is the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz , in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 1752 inhabitants on an area of 19.7 km².

traffic

With the decision of the CP in 2012 to use Linha do Oeste only for freight traffic, the municipality loses its own connection to the railroad, with the Amieira and Bicanho stops.

The municipality is located on the A17 , between the motorway exits from Marinha das Ondas and Maiorca .

economy

Agriculture is still an important factor, especially the cultivation of cereals (in addition to maize, oats and wheat, especially rice). Since the end of the 19th century the community experienced a wave of emigration to Brazil and the then Portuguese colonies , and since the 1960s another wave of emigration to Central Europe. Today, the residents of the municipality find employment mainly in the companies of the urban communities of the Figueira da Foz district, in addition to some local social institutions and smaller businesses (trade, catering)
