Alteburg (Hesse)
Old castle

The Alteburg , also known as Altenburg , is a lost moated castle in the Alteburg Park of the city of Schotten in the Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse .

description

An early ring wall system can be assumed as the predecessor of the Alteburg . Finds made in 1960 point to the Hallstatt period. The moated castle probably developed around 1000 on an artificially raised castle hill, surrounded by a circular moat fed by the Nidda and served to monitor an important highway that led along the Nidda over the heights of the Vogelsberg. After the castle was destroyed by the Rhenish Association of Cities in 1382 , it was not rebuilt.

The splendid half-timbered building , which is still very well preserved today , was built as a widow's residence in the 16th century by the barons of Günderrode , who had a fiefdom of the Landgraves of Hesse in Schotten . The Alteburg was first mentioned in 1547 when it was included in the documents as an old bower . The aristocratic seat is privately owned, the Alteburgpark park with the moat is freely accessible.
