Altenmünster is a district of Crailsheim , which together with Ingersheim an der Jagst formed its own community until it was incorporated on April 1, 1940 . Despite its location close to the city center, it has largely retained its village character and is structurally separated from the city's central settlement zone by traffic routes, vacant lots and industrial areas on the edge.

geography

location

Old cathedral is located at about 410- 430  m above sea level. NHN in the southwest of the Crailsheim urban area south of the Murrbahntrasse , which clearly separates it from the northern districts. It is traversed roughly in the middle in northeast-southwest direction by the state road 1066 ("Gaildorfer Strasse") and divided into two halves. The old village center is located on the south-east side of the state road near the source of the Brunnenbach, which has now been twisted for a long time . The later and much more extensive building areas extend north to the embankment of the Murrbahn, east to close to the route of the Upper Jagstbahn and west to the foot of the slope of over 450  m above sea level. NHN high Kreuzberg .

Neighboring places

The development of Altenmünster merges partially in a westerly direction with that of the Flügelau industrial estate. To the north - separated by the Murrbahn - is the Fliegerhorst district, to the east, a good half a kilometer away beyond the Upper Jagstbahn and the valley basin of the Jagst, the Ingersheim district , which can be reached via the K 2642 . The L 1066 leads to the Onolzheim district, a little further to the south-west (distances as the crow flies from settlement edge to settlement edge).

history

The place was first mentioned under the name Munster in 1270, then in 1285/86 as Altemunster and finally from 1326 under the current name. The name of the originally rural hamlet is derived from the Latin monasterium (monastery). Presumably an exemte monastery church for Saints Peter and Paul stood here in the 8th century as part of a family monastery of the Maulachgau counts, which must have left early; however, there is no documentary evidence.

From the 14th century there is evidence of changing rule and ownership. Altenmünster fell to Hohenlohe as the heir of the Counts of Flügelau . In 1399 it came to the Principality of Ansbach , which held all rights, except for the bailiwick of some subjects of the Goldbach manor , the Ellrichshausen and the imperial city of Hall .

In 1613 and 1634 the plague raged in Altenmünster , killing 32 residents.

Between 1622 and 1640 soldiers were repeatedly stationed. In 1688, as part of the War of the Palatinate Succession, Antoine de Pas attacked Crailsheim and the neighboring Altenmünster with 1000 dragoons and 300–400 men on foot. 48 men dared to venture out of the city, but were captured and locked in the church in Altenmünster. In 1741 French auxiliary troops were again in Altenmünster. On September 3, 4,000 French had set up camp, on the 7th 4,000 horsemen followed.

For many centuries, it was mainly poor tenants and day laborers who lived in Altenmünster . In 1828 the hamlet had about 220 inhabitants. During this time, settlement was concentrated around the church and along today's Alte Dorfstrasse and Kirchstrasse. Only when the city of Crailsheim was connected to the railway in 1866 did this increasingly change. Over the years, a railway settlement was built north of the town center along today's Gaildorfer Straße.

Until 1940 Altenmünster was part of the Crailsheim District Office and was part of Ingersheim as a place to live . On April 1, 1940 Ingersheim was incorporated into Crailsheim. At that time Altenmünster already had about 1400 inhabitants. Since then, the district has grown rapidly through the development of large areas. In the post-war period, several smaller and larger companies settled west of Altenmünster, which helped the district to further flourish. At the beginning of the 1970s, two large residential high-rises were built west of the L 1066, which still shape the townscape today.

Today Altenmünster forms one of the most populous districts of Crailsheim with 1388 inhabitants east and 1959 west of the L 1066. It is part of the self-image of many Altenmünster residents to refer to themselves as Altenmünster rather than Crailsheimer.

religion

Today is one parish Altenmuenster the church district Crailsheim on.

It is mentioned in a document that Altenmünster belonged to the patronage of the Ellwangen Monastery at the beginning of the 14th century . The first pastor worked here from 1285. The first pastor mentioned by name was Konrad Faber from 1378. During Johannes Brenz's lifetime under Pastor Hans Karpf (1523–1548), the church became Protestant. The late Gothic predecessor building with high altar of the Peter and Paul Church , which still dominates the town center, dates from 1444 and had to be demolished in 1730 due to its dilapidation. The successor building, which still exists today, was completed as early as 1731. In 1752 he was charged with a single-manual organ in the Baroque style provided, which in 1964 by Helmut Bornefeld expanded and new scheduled was. According to contradicting statements, this organ originally came from the workshop of the Hofener organ builder Johann Georg Allgeyer the Elder. J. , or that of his brother Joseph Allgeyer from Wasseralfingen . The rectory right next to the church dates from 1767.

In 1973 the Friedenskirche was built at the confluence of Kirchstrasse and Gaildorfer Strasse. The Allgeyer organ was dismantled and moved to the new church. The old Peter and Paul Church became less important and deteriorated. Thanks to numerous donations, however, it was possible to extensively refurbish and renovate it in the years 1993-96 under Pastor Helmut Buddensiek . At the same time, a new Mühleisen organ was commissioned for the Friedenskirche and the Allgeyer organ returned to its original location.

The Peter and Paul Church is used nowadays for weddings, for weekly evening prayer, for church services during the major holidays as well as for individual special services such as Ascension Day, Day of Repentance and Prayer, National Mourning Day and the Sunday after Christmas. Concerts are also held here again and again, as the church interior has excellent acoustics.
