Ferdinand Friedrich von Sandrart (born July 17, 1774 in Calbe (Saale) , † January 24, 1866 in Koblenz ) was a Prussian major general and brigadier of the 8th Landgendarmerie Brigade in Koblenz.

Life

origin

Ferdinand Friedrich came from the Walloon family Sandrart from Hainaut , who immigrated to Frankfurt am Main in 1571/72 because of their Protestant faith . He was the son of the Dutch major and later war and domain councilor Karl Johann Wilhelm von Sandrart (1742–1796) and his wife Anna Dorothea, née Kemmerich (1753–1834). His brother was the general of the cavalry Wilhelm von Sandrart .

Military career

Sandrart occurred on September 20 in 1788 as Junker in the hussar regiment "of Wolffradt" the Prussian army , and came on March 27, 1792, cornet in the newly built hussar battalion "Frankenberg" . There he was promoted to prime lieutenant until mid-December 1805 . In the fourth coalition war, Sandrart fought near Schleiz and Jena and the defense of Glogau . In 1807 he was aggregated to the "von Blücher" hussar regiment .

After the Treaty of Tilsit , he was transferred to the Brandenburg Hussar Regiment on January 1, 1808 , and rose to Rittmeister and squadron chief by the end of March 1813 . During the Wars of Liberation he was wounded at the Katzbach and Leipzig and awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. Sandrart also took part in the battles near Neukirchen, Goldberg, Löwenberg, Hochkirch, Reichenbach and Freyburg . On November 19, 1813 he was transferred to the Landwehr cavalry between the Elbe and Weser . He fought at Laon , Paris , La Chausee, Chalons, Chateau-Thierry , Montmirail , Mery and Meaux in 1814 . From August 16, 1814, he worked as a district brigadier in the gendarmerie between Weser and Rhine in Lengerich and rose to major on December 28, 1814 .

On April 16, 1815 he was entrusted with running the business as a senior brigadier in Münster . His appointment followed on February 13, 1817, until Sandrart took over the 8th Landgendarmerie Brigade in Koblenz on March 1, 1821. In this position, he was on 30 March 1827. Lieutenant Colonel and on March 30, 1839 Patent of 4 April 1830 Colonel promoted. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, he was awarded the Order of St. John on September 20, 1838 . On September 12, 1842, Sandrart was given the character of major general and at the end of October 1842 he received approval to wear both the general uniform and the gendarmerie uniform with general epaulettes and the number of the brigade. On April 11, 1848, he took his leave with the statutory pension and a personal allowance.

On the occasion of the coronation of King Wilhelm I in Königsberg , Sandrart was awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves on October 18, 1861 . He died on January 24, 1866 in Koblenz and was buried there two days later.

General von Tippelskirch wrote in his assessment in 1821: “Quite an experienced businessman and especially respectable through his always tactful behavior, even in the complicated cases. His brigade is in good order and the gendarmerie under him has the best reputation in the country, highly recommended. "
