The moated castle Flügelau is a lost moated castle in a damp meadow low at the confluence of the Herrenbach in the Maulach about one kilometer southwest of Crailsheim-Roßfeld in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg .

history

First indirect mention of the castle around 1240 with " Chrafto comes de Flugelawe ". The literature partly assumes - cautiously - that the Franconian Maulachgaugrafen would have sat on Flügelau. One of them is known by name, Heinrich, who is mentioned in two documents before 1050; At the same time, however, Konrad, the first Count of Flügelau, is named as the builder and the castle is said to have been first mentioned around 1250. The lineage of the Flügelau is said to have died out in the male line at the beginning of the 14th century and the castle fell into disrepair before 1357.

description

A mound of earth about three meters high rises in the middle of a square of flatter earth walls, which are only faintly recognizable in some places; they are more conspicuous on the north side. More recent drainage ditches seem to follow the contour of the complex on two sides, one crosses it. From the formerly rectangular tower castle with moat and outer bailey , no wall remains can be seen.
