George H. Amidon

George Hilton Amidon (born July 12, 1904 in Littleton , New Hampshire , † November 28, 1976 in Barre , Vermont ) was an American businessman and politician who was State Treasurer from 1949 to 1965 .

Life

George H. Amidon was born in Littleton, New Hampshire to Freeman Ellis Wakefield Amidon and Mary Ward Walker. He attended Wells River High School and graduated from Boston University in the College of Business Administration .

He was a Republican Party member and initially worked as an area auditor in the Vermont State Auditor's office . He was Tax Commissioner from 1945 to 1949, was appointed Deputy State Treasurer and, in 1949, after Levi R. Kelley's resignation, Vermont State Treasurer to complete Kelley's tenure. He was re-elected to this office until 1965.

Amidon was a director of Montpelier National Bank and Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Co.

George H. Amidon was married to Theresa Jean Liddle (1904–1978). He died on November 28, 1976. His grave is in McIndoe Falls Cemetery in Barnet, Vermont.
