Antonio Sanseverino
Antonio Sanseverino OSJH (* around 1477 in Naples , † August 17 or 18, 1543 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman , Archbishop of Taranto and cardinal .
Life
He was the fourth of five children and the second son of the Neapolitan patrician Giovanni Antonio Sanseverino, signor of San Chirico , and his wife Enrichetta Carafa. Other cardinals from the Sanseverino family were Guglielmo Sanseverino , Federico Sanseverino , Lucio Sanseverino and Stanislao Sanseverino . Antonio Sanseverino became a Knight of the Order of St. John (later the Order of Malta). Pope Leo X is said to have made him cardinal in pectore , but since Fra 'Antonio was a layman at the time , this was never published; and since the cardinals were raised under circumstances with which he did not agree, neither Leo X. nor his successor Hadrian VI. Sanseverino as a validly created cardinal.
Pope Clement VII created Antonio Sanseverino in the consistory of November 21, 1527 as a cardinal priest , the red hat and Santa Susanna as the titular church , the Pope awarded him on April 27, 1528 through the legate Cardinal Lorenzo Campeggio . Shortly afterwards, Antonio Sanseverino received through Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the later Pope Paul III. , the tonsure and on April 29, 1528 the minor ordinations as well as the ordination as subdeacon and the ordination of deacons . The ordination received Antonio Sanseverino, also by Cardinal Farnese, on 17 November 1528 in the same ceremony Cardinal Girolamo Grimaldi to sub-deacon and deacon ordained.
Antonio Sanseverino was appointed Archbishop of Taranto on August 31, 1528, and he held this bishopric until his death. He was ordained bishop on December 21, 1531 in the Sistine Chapel by Pope Clement VII; Co-consecrators were the Cardinals Alessandro Farnese, Bishop of Ostia , Antonio Ciocchi del Monte , Bishop of Porto , and Andrea della Valle . Cardinals Francisco de los Ángeles Quiñones , Francesco Cornaro and Giovanni Domenico De Cupis received the episcopal ordination together with Antonio Sanseverino .
He opted on September 5, 1534 to the titular church Santa Maria in Trastevere . Antonio Sanseverino was a participant in the 1534 conclave , in which Pope Paul III. was chosen. As a cardinal protector of the Capuchin Order , he successfully resisted an alliance with the Franciscan Observants . On November 28, 1537 he opted for the cardinal class of the cardinal bishops and for the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . On April 21, 1539, together with the Cardinals Lorenzo Campeggio , Giacomo Simoneta and Girolamo Aleandro, he was appointed legate for the council that would later go down in history as the Council of Trent . On August 4, 1539 he opted for the suburbicarian diocese of Sabina and on January 8, 1543 for the diocese of Porto and Santa Rufina . He was sub-dean of the Holy Quorum .
Antonio Sanseverino died on the night of August 17th to 18th, 1543 and was buried in the Roman church of Santissima Trinità al Monte Pincio .
