The Unia Pracy (German Arbeitsunion ; UP ) is a social democratic party in Poland .
history
Unia Pracy was created in 1992 through the merger of several small social democratic parties. In doing so, it distinguished itself on the one hand from liberal and conservative directions, on the other hand from the post-communist League of the Democratic Left (SLD). It relies on the intervention of the state in favor of the socially disadvantaged and on the limitation of the influence of the Catholic Church on Polish politics.
In the 1997 parliamentary elections , the UP failed because of the five percent threshold and therefore formed an electoral alliance with the SLD before the 2001 election. After the election success in 2001, she formed a coalition government together with the SLD and the PSL under Prime Minister Leszek Miller . The UP was represented in the Sejm with 16 members as an independent parliamentary group. Its chairman, Marek Pol, was both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure in the Miller cabinet.
In the 2005 election , the SLD and UP again ran as single parties. After the left-wing coalition under Leszek Miller was shaken by numerous corruption scandals, both parties received significantly less approval. The UP could no longer win a seat.
During the legislative period, the SLD and the UP again formed an alliance in 2006. The electoral coalition also comprised the Democratic Party (PD), which emerged from the Freedom Union (UW), and the SLD spin-off Social Democracy of Poland (SdPL). The result was poor: Compared to the aggregated election results of the individual parties in the 2005 Sejm election, the alliance lost 4.5 percent of the votes in the 2007 election and dissolved again in 2008.
