Aktiebolaget Arlöfs Mekaniska Verkstad & Waggonfabrik was a Swedish machine factory in Arlöv .

history

In the late 1890s, the Swede Ludvig Rössel founded the company Ludvig Rössels Mekaniska Verkstad AB (in short: Ludvig Rössels Mek. Verkstad ), which manufactured rail vehicles and trams . In the beginning the factory was in Malmö , but in 1898 the company headquarters was relocated to Arlöv in Skåne .

In addition to rail technology, Ludvig Rössel also tried to build automobiles. In 1902 he showed a copy at a large exhibition in Copenhagen . It is not known whether it was these attempts that led the factory into bankruptcy that same year .

Railway technology

From this insolvent company, Aktiebolaget Arlöfs Mekaniska Verkstad & Waggonfabrik was formed in 1902 . In the following years, the company concentrated again on the production of railway material, especially freight cars and passenger cars . A small series of nine steam railcars were built between 1907 and 1912 for Swedish private railways in standard and narrow-gauge versions. One of them found its way to Denmark when Langelandsbanen purchased the LB M 1 in 1911 . However, this was unsuccessful there and was converted into a baggage car in 1914. Some of the important parts for the steam railcars such as boilers and prime movers were designed and manufactured by the French company Purrey in Bordeaux .

At the beginning of the 1900s, the machine factory produced various types of railway wagons. In some cases, around 1300 new vehicles were built each year until 1918. A number of Danish private railways were supplied with wagons by Arlöv. This applies to the Thisted – Fjerritslev Jernbane (TFJ), which received several wagons in 1908, and the Silkeborg – Kjellerup – Rødkærsbro Jernbane (SKRJ), which received a number of closed freight wagons from the Swedish factory in 1913.

Some of Arlöv cars have been preserved, including the passenger car museum railway Nordsjællands Veterantog OKMJ C 9 of 1911, which for Kertemindebanen was built. Also OMB B 5 of Dansk Jernbane Club , the 1911 Bogensebanen was delivered, is on Lolland received. Alongside Denmark, Belgium was one of the most important foreign sales markets.

Motor vehicles

The company only produced automobiles in 1901 or between 1901 and 1902 . The brand name was Arlöv . The company manufactured automobiles and obtained the necessary parts from Peugeot . In addition, a truck was presented at an exhibition in 1902 .

takeover

Aktiebolaget Arlöfs Mekaniska Verkstad & Waggonfabrik was acquired in 1918 by the Swedish company AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstadta in Linköping , which was founded in 1907 . The factory in Arlöv remained and manufactured railroad cars until 1965.
