Arndt von Steuben

Gottlieb Arndt von Steuben (born July 26, 1826 in Eisenach , † April 29, 1900 in Görlitz ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

He was a member of the noble family of Steuben . His parents were the Grand Ducal Saxon Colonel and Chamberlain Georg von Steuben (1788–1863) and his wife Adelheid, née von Kracht (1798–1882).

Military career

Steuben received his training in his parents' home and at the grammar schools in Eisenach and Erfurt . On April 11, 1843, he joined the Sachsen-Weimar contingent as a musketeer and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by mid-February 1846 . In 1848 Steuben took part in the campaign against Denmark . As a prime lieutenant in March 1850 he became a battalion adjutant and in early January 1858 leader of the 5th Company. On July 31, 1858, when he was promoted to captain, he was appointed company commander . During the German War Steuben was not actively involved in combat operations, but belonged to the occupation of the federal fortresses of Mainz and Ulm .

On September 25, 1867, Steuben joined the Prussian Army as a captain and company commander in the 5th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 94 (Grand Duke of Saxony) . He rose to major on November 10, 1868 and was transferred to the 3rd Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 20 in Wittenberg on March 16, 1869 as commander of the 2nd Battalion . Steuben led his battalion in the 1870 war against France in the battles of Vionville and Gravelotte and the siege of Metz . On September 29th he received the Iron Cross 2nd class. In the battle near Chilleurs-aux-Bois , the two bones of his right lower leg were smashed by a hand horse , so that Steuben could no longer take part in the further campaign.

At the end of 1871 Steuben was able to work again. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 2, 1873, and on June 1, 1875, he was commander of the Fusilier battalion. On May 18, 1876, Steuben rose to command of the 3rd Hanoverian Infantry Regiment No. 79 in Hildesheim and in this capacity he was promoted to colonel on September 20, 1876 . On September 7, 1881, Steuben was awarded the Order of the Crown, 2nd class, for his services in troop leadership . Under position à la suite of the regiment, he was appointed commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade in Glogau on November 16, 1882 . A few days later he advanced to major general and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves , on January 18, 1885 on the occasion of the festival of the order . With the approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposal on February 11, 1886 with the statutory pension .

Steuben spent his old age in Görlitz, where he died of a heart attack .
