Arsen Julfalakjan ( Armenian Արսեն Ջուլֆալակյան ; born May 8, 1987 in Leninakan , Armenian SSR , USSR ) is an Armenian wrestler . He became European champion in 2009 , world champion in 2014 and won a silver medal in Greco-Roman style at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , both in the welterweight division .

Career

Arsen Dschulfalakjan started wrestling as a teenager in 1998. He belongs to a sports club in Yerevan and was or is trained by Aram Gasparjan and Samuel Geworkjan and, since joining the Armenian national team, by Armen Babalarjan. Arsen Dschulfalakjan is the son of Levon Dschulfalakjan , the Olympic lightweight champion in Greco-Roman. Style of Seoul 1988 and current vice-president of the Armenian Wrestling Federation, who also contributed a lot to his success as a coach.

Arsen Dschulfalakjan concentrates fully on the Greco-Roman style and grew from being lightweight (up to 66 kg body weight) to welter weight (up to 74 kg body weight). He was already extremely successful as a junior. In 2003 in Rostov and in 2004 in Albena he was respectively junior European champion and in 2007 in Beijing even junior world champion in Greco-Roman style in light and welterweight.

In 2007 it was also used for the first time in an international championship among seniors. He started at the European Welterweight Championship in Sofia . He won victories over such renowned wrestlers as Seref Tüfenk from Turkey and Mark Overgaard Madsen , the 2005 vice world champion from Denmark . But he had to accept defeats from Manuchar K Wirkwelia from Georgia and Valdemars Venckaitis from Lithuania , which put him in 5th place. At the world championship of the same year in Baku he managed a victory over Oleg Mikhailovich from Belarus. Against the experienced Marko Yli-Hannuksela from Finland he suffered a defeat in his second fight and finished in 21st place in the final result.

In 2008 he tried for the Olympic Games in Beijing to qualify. He first finished in a qualifying tournament in Ostia near Rome, the 14th place, which is not sufficient for participation in Beijing. Literally in the last second, he was able to qualify because he took 3rd place in the last qualifying tournament for the games in Novi Sad behind Volodymyr Schazkych from Ukraine and Aljaksandr Kikinjou from Belarus , who was able to participate in the wrestling tournament at the Olympic Games in Beijing eligible.

In Beijing he succeeded in welterweight in his first fight a point victory over Wolodymyr Schazkych. In the next fight he lost against the reigning European champion Péter Bácsi from Hungary very narrowly on points (1: 2 rounds, 6: 8 technical points) and, since Bácsi did not reach the final, had to retire without being able to continue fighting in the consolation round . He finished 10th.

In the spring of 2009 he started, much improved, at the European Championships in Vilnius , where he became the new European welterweight champion with victories over Neven Zugaj from Croatia , Adam Juretzko from Germany , Alexanders Visnakovs, Lithuania , Aljaksandr Kikinjou and Wolodymyr Schazkych . At the World Championships this year in Herning / Denmark he first won over Robert Rosengren from Sweden, but then lost to the experienced Olympic third party Christophe Guénot from France, which meant he was eliminated and only came in 15th place.

In 2010 he only competed at the World Cup in Moscow. There he was very successful and became vice world champion. On the way to this great success he defeated Francisco Barrio, Argentina, Jure Kuhar, Slovenia, Daniar Kobonow, Kyrgyzstan and Takehiro Kanakubo, Japan. In the final he lost to Selçuk Çebi from Turkey. In 2011 Arsen Dschulfalakjan reached 5th place at the European welterweight championships in Dortmund. Decisive for this were defeats against Péter Bácsi , Hungary and in the consolation round against Roman Vlasov from Russia. At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul he won another medal, the bronze one. He defeated there u. a. Wolodymyr Schazkych, then lost to Selcuk Cebi and then needed three victories over strong opponents to win the bronze medal. Winning the bronze medal also earned him the right to start the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Before these games, he won another bronze medal at the European Championships in Belgrade in March 2012. He lost there again against the outstanding Roman Vlasov and then won in the consolation round over Meraldo Ndoka, Albania, Seref Tüfenk , Turkey and Dimitri Pyschkow from Ukraine. In London he won over Daniar Kobonow, Aljaksandr Kikinjou, Belarus and Emin Akhmedov from Azerbaijan. In the final he was defeated by Roman Wlassow in two rounds. But winning the Olympic silver medal is a great success for him.

From the 2009/10 season, Arsen Dschulfalakjan wrestles in the German wrestling league for KSV Aalen , with whom he also became German team champion. In the final round of the German team championship 2012 he defeated u. a. also Tamas Lörincz , the silver medalist from the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the lightweight category.

In 2013 he took part in two major international events. In July 2013 he won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Kazan behind Roman Vlasov and Hadi Alireza Pournia from Iran. He won the same medal at the World Championships in Budapest. He defeated Florian Marchl, Austria, then lost to Roman Wlassow and defeated in the consolation round Alvis Albino Alendra Jimenez from Panama, Esengeldi Kochubek, Kyrgyzstan and Mark Overgaard Madsen, Denmark.

In April 2014, Arsen Dschulfalakjan was also able to fully convince at the European Championships in Vantaa / Finland. In the new weight category up to 75 kg, he defeated Neven Zugaj , Serbia, Florian Marchl, Austria, Robert Rosengren, Sweden and Mark Overgaard Madsen. In the final, against Alexander Czechirkin from Russia was narrowly and controversially defeated on points. At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, he achieved his greatest success of his career so far. There he was world champion with victories over Elwin Mursalijew, Azerbaijan, Florian Marchl, Austria, Juan Escobar, Mexico, Zurab Datunaschwili, Georgia and Neven Zugaj, Croatia.

He was unable to defend this title at the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas. He lost his first fight against Roman Vlasov on points there in the same weight class as in 2014. But he was able to continue in the consolation round and defeated Petr Novak from Czechoslovakia and Peter Bacsi from Hungary before losing to Doschan Kartikow from Kazakhstan, which he eliminated and finished in 9th place. Arsen Dschulfalakjan did not start at the 1st European Games in Baku in 2015.
