Auferstanden (Original title: Risen ) is a 2015 produced feature film directed by Kevin Reynolds . The film was released on February 19, 2016 in the United States. In Germany it was published on March 17, 2016. According to information from Sony Pictures Filmverleih in Vienna, the film will not be shown in Austria.

action

The focus of the film is the Roman military tribune Clavius. After returning from a skirmish against insurgents in which he killed the Jewish resistance fighter Barrabas, the war-experienced officer received an order from the governor Pilate in Jerusalem to oversee the completion of the crucifixion of a man whom Pilate had condemned during the Passover holiday. Clavius and his young adjutant Lucius arrive at the crucifixion site shortly after the condemned's death. The tribune is present at the Descent from the Cross and the burial of the executed man by Joseph of Arimathea. The Jewish priesthood urges Pilate to have the tomb sealed and guarded because the dead body could be stolen by his followers. Jeshua, the name of the condemned man from Nazareth in Galilee, is venerated by them as the Messiah and is said to have announced his resurrection himself during his lifetime. Pilate transfers responsibility to Clavius.

On the third day the grave is inexplicably empty, the guards have fled and the body has disappeared. The governor fears unrest. The Emperor Tiberius is expected to visit Judea in a few weeks , and Pilate is determined to restore order beforehand. Clavius goes on a search for the missing corpse. First he takes action against anyone who spreads rumors in public that Yeshua might still be alive. During his investigations, he comes across the former prostitute and Jesus supporter Maria Magdalena and the Jesus disciple Bartholomäus, whose interrogations do not help him. He is put under pressure by Pilate and finally presents him with the corpse of another crucified. The governor sees through the maneuver, but is still satisfied and wants to send the tribune to another mission. But Clavius worries about his encounters and he continues to investigate on his own. In a tavern he tracks down one of the deserted grave guards who confesses to him that the story of the theft of the corpse spread by the priests is not true.

Through a spy, he succeeds in getting near the hiding place of the Jesus followers in the city. When he enters the room in which the core of the disciples' circle resides, he recognizes Jeshua, who was believed to be dead, and watches his encounter with the apostle Thomas . Thereupon the tribune deserted and followed the disciples of Jesus, who moved to Galilee, where they wanted to meet the risen Jeshua again. Due to a mishap, Clavius injures the leg of Peter, the leader of the apostles, and becomes friends with him. Pilate sends a cavalry unit after the disciples to bring Clavius back. The soldiers circle the group on a hill, but Clavius leads the disciples through a ravine out of the encirclement. He meets Lucius, who is supposed to arrest or kill him, but can persuade him to let him go and not to betray him. Arrived at the Sea of Galilee , Clavius takes part in a fishing expedition of the disciples and experiences their encounter with Jeshua on the lake shore. During the night he has a personal conversation with Jeshua, which gives him clarity about his life goal. The next morning he witnesses the ascension of Yeshua. When the disciples part, Clavius says goodbye to Peter and wants to start a new life.

In the framework of the story, Clavius tells his story to the host of a hostel and gives him his tribune ring.

background

The film was shot in Spain and Malta . The basic idea of the plot is similar to that of the feature film The End of the Gods from 2006.

In Austria, the news that the film would not start shortly before Easter 2016 caused some irritation. Although it was dubbed into German and the trailer was also shown in Austrian cinemas in the weeks before the start date, the film was not released there on March 17, 2016, as it was in Germany. Reasons were not disclosed; they are only known to those in charge of the Sony production company in the United States, said the Sony marketing director responsible for the Austrian market, Birgit Rauner. The fact that films that are shown in Germany are not shown in other German-speaking countries for reasons of marketing strategy is nothing unusual. In Germany, too, the film was only shown briefly or not at all in a number of cinemas.

Reviews

  • Catholic Film Service : “The attempt to tell the resurrection as a detective story and to certify the truth of the biblical testimonies by viewing it from the perspective of a skeptic only partially succeeds. The figure drawing remains one-dimensional, action elements are interspersed rather arbitrarily in order to increase the entertainment value, the plot overall seems implausible in many respects. " ( Peter Hasenberg )
  • epd Film : “The long break from work didn't hurt. Reynolds still masters his craft, he stages fluidly and visually, knows how to lead actors and has a good feeling for landscapes and atmosphere. »Auferstanden«, originally conceived as something like a sequel to Mel Gibson's »Passion of the Christ«, looks a lot better than the usual biblical retelling, comes without exaggerated pathos and even finds a new perspective on the often told »greatest story of all Times «." (Frank Schnelle)
  • Evangelical news agency idea : “Unfortunately, in the last third of the film, the film presses the pious tube extremely and ends up being kitschy. The violins fiddle all too solemnly, the disciples look emotionally fuzzy, the images turn out to be sweet, and the flight into the supernatural increases dramatically. ” (Karsten Huhn)
  • dpa : "As brutal and bloody as Gibson's" Passion "is" Resurrected "not - even if director Reynolds does not shy away from very explicit crucifixion scenes or scenes of exhumations in search of the corpse of Jesus, which are not necessarily something for weak stomachs . In contrast to «Passion», his rather edifying film hardly gives an opportunity for any form of impetus. He swings himself up to the great missionary story and tells the story of a Roman's development from Saul to Paul, faithfully to the Bible and completely free of irony. "
