August Cueni (born May 12, 1883 in Zwingen ; † October 25, 1966 there ; entitled to live in Dittingen , Basel-Land ) was a Swiss artist .

life and work

August Cueni was the eldest son of the small farmer August Cueni and Ottilia Anklin. After his schooling in compelling and running he visited in Basel the business school . In 1902 he worked briefly as an accountant in the Hotel Rigi-Kaltbad . From 1903 to 1905 he completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Basel and attended drawing courses with Fritz Schnider at the Basel School of Applied Arts .

After completing his apprenticeship as a painter, Cueni went to the roller coaster with August Wanner . Your first destination was St. Gallen . Later it went on to the Rhineland , Strasbourg , Heidelberg , Holland and Belgium . They hiked back to St. Gallen via Stuttgart and Ulm . In 1910 Cueni went to Munich with Albert Nyfeler . There he attended the arts and crafts school and became a student of Julius Diez . He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl , Adolf Hengeler and Ludwig Herterich until 1914 . During this time he made friends with Alfred Heinrich Pellegrini , Otto Plattner and Alexander Zschokke .

In 1914 Cueni returned to Zwingen. The nearby Birstal and Kaltbrunnental , the Lüssell , the Jura , the Lötschental and the Valais and Engadine Alps cast a spell over him. The impressionist nature and landscape painter Cueni was later also called the "Cézanne of the Laufental".

In 1915 he was able to show his works to a larger audience for the first time in the Kunsthalle Basel . In 1919 Cueni joined the Basel GSMBA and in 1920 began to work with his artistic themes with woodcuts and linocuts . In the same year he married the care assistant ( individual help ) Christine Dahmen from Germany. Exhibitions followed in Basel, Bern , Zurich , St. Gallen and Solothurn . His works include oil paintings , drawings, woodcuts and linocuts. His deep connection to nature was a source of inspiration and creative power throughout his life. In 1959, Cueni received honorary citizenship from Zwingen.
