August Gotthilf von Bockum (born April 17, 1788 in Zuchen , † September 10, 1851 in Paulsdorf ) was a Prussian major general .

August was the son of the Prussian captain and head of an invalid company Karl von Bockum and his wife, a born von Manteuffel .

Military career

On April 15, 1800, Bockum entered the infantry regiment of Prince Ferdinand of Prussia as a private corporal and was promoted to second lieutenant by the end of September 1806 . In the fourth coalition war he fought in the battles near Lauenburg and Zarrentin.

After the Peace of Tilsit , Bockum took his leave on September 2, 1809 with the permission to go into foreign service, but on February 22, 1813 he joined the Lützow Freikorps as a volunteer hunter . During the Wars of Liberation he took part in the blockade of Hamburg as well as the sieges of Jülich , Maubeuge and Philippeville , where he received the Order of St. Vladimir IV class. He also fought in the battles at Ligny and Belle Alliance , for which he was awarded the Iron Cross II class and the Order of St. Stanislaus II class. On May 28, 1814 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and on March 31, 1815 transferred to the 25th Infantry Regiment .

After the war, Bockum rose to captain and company commander on March 11, 1816 and was transferred to the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment on October 25, 1816 . When he was promoted to major on April 14, 1826, he was appointed a regular staff officer . From March 21, 1829 to March 29, 1839 he acted as commander of the 1st battalion. Subsequently, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel initially in charge of the 16th Infantry Regiment in Düsseldorf and was appointed commander on January 28, 1840. In this position he was promoted to colonel on September 10, 1840, and on September 12, 1842, Bockum received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow. With an annual pension of 1750 thalers he retired on 10 August 1845, received while the character as a major general. He died on September 10, 1851 in Paulsdorf.

His brigade commander, General von Üchtritz, wrote in his assessment in 1841: “With a very respectable solid character, he combines thorough service knowledge and great activity. Even if he does not have a varied scientific education, he replaces this deficiency with a very healthy judgment based on experience. He is therefore to be regarded as a very capable regimental commander who exercises a very favorable influence on his subordinates. "

Bockum married on January 6, 1846 in Darsen, Schlochau district, Emilie von Stutterheim (1803–1879), widowed von Paulsdorf. She was the owner of Gut Paulsdorf A and B.
