history

The collegiate church

Bédouès was 1,352 as Bedoescus mentioned in a document in the 17th century Bedoese called. Pope Urban V (1310-1370) had a collegiate church built in Bédouès over the graves of his parents in 1363. The fortified church stands on a rock on the Tarn. It was surrounded by a wall with four towers. Matthieu Merle (1548–1584), a captain of the Huguenots , captured the collegiate church in 1580 during the Huguenot Wars . His troops plundered and pillaged. All canons and secular defenders were killed. The collegiate church was rebuilt around 1620 and protected by soldiers until the edict of grace of Alès in 1629. The fortifications of the church were devastated again during the French Revolution (1789–1799) and the collegiate church became a national property . It was bought by a private person who sold it to the parish of Bédouès for 300 francs . In 1825 a pastor was reinstated.

The municipality of Bédouès merged with Cocurès on January 1, 2016 to form the new municipality of Bédouès-Cocurès.
