The Fulda-Bronnzell – Gersfeld railway , also known as the Rhönbahn , is a railway line in Hesse . The branch line branches in Fulda district Bronnzell from the Kinzig Valley Railway and leads from there to Gersfeld in the Rhön . The branch station was originally called Bronnzell and was integrated into the Fulda station as part of the Fulda Bronnzell station when the Fulda – Würzburg high-speed line was built.
history
opening
The Royal Prussian State Railways opened the line on October 1, 1888. The first timetable included three pairs of trains . The planned closure of the gap across the border into the Bavarian Bischofsheim with a connection to Bad Neustadt / Saale never came about, although the train station in Gersfeld was specially built 20 meters higher for this purpose. The line was operated with steam locomotives until 1965 , then with rail buses of the VT 98 series . In addition, the 211 series with four-axle conversion cars was also used. After almost a hundred years, the line was supposed to be closed in 1989. Outdated technology and the condition of the track, due to the old track material, partly from the 1920s, as well as the outdated vehicles, had caused passenger numbers to drop.
modernization
In April 1993 the Rhön Railway Agreement was signed between the district of Fulda and the Deutsche Bundesbahn and the closure was therefore stopped. Two diesel multiple units of the DB class 628 were procured and an hourly service every working day was introduced. A modernization of the route, in which the district, the state of Hesse , the EU and the neighboring communities of Gersfeld, Ebersburg , Eichenzell and Fulda contributed financially, was completed in spring 2006. In addition to the rail system and some route signals, several stops along the route were also renewed . Since the renovation work, the route has been operated in signaled train control . The train conductor sits in the signal box in Fulda .
Vehicle use
LINT 41 diesel multiple units are currently in use (2018) . The railway company is the Hessische Landesbahn GmbH (HLB).
route
The 23.4 kilometer long route is single-track, there is a possibility of crossing at Lütter station . All trains run to and from Fulda, the symmetry minute is: 08 and thus deviates by almost ten minutes from the usual, which means that the transfer times in Fulda are around 20 minutes longer in one direction than in the opposite direction. This contradicts the basic idea of the integral clock timetable . The route largely follows the Fulda river to Gersfeld.
In the Deutsche Bahn AG , the route carries in the course book number 616, the RMV is the passenger trains as line 52. In the course book of the German Reichsbahn it was number 171e in 1939th
Operating points
Welkers industrial railway
In the industrial area Eichenzell was the siding of the garbage cans manufacturer Schad, this chain directly from behind the station Eichenzell-Welker. Today, however, the connection is no longer used because the nearby motorway connection to the A 7 and A 66 offers a more economical means of transport. The switch was dismantled. The construction of a P + R parking lot is planned.
Gersfeld train station (Rhön)
The former Gersfeld (Rhön) station, which has now been downgraded to a stop , was originally equipped with four switches and four tracks. There was a house platform , a makeshift platform at the bypass , a siding and a loading siding . The goods shed was attached to the side of the stately two-story entrance building , a brick building which is now a listed building . The station restaurant was located in a further extension . Today the reception building is used for other purposes. The station also had a connection to a basalt works about 1.5 kilometers down the line towards Bronnzell, the connection once provided for most of the station's goods volume . The connection was served at least until the end of the 1970s.
