The Barbarossaweg is now 326 km long distance hiking trail in the northern part of Hesse and Thuringia with the route sign -Markierung  X  and - where appropriate - with the path number "8" (  X8  ).

Formation and re-routing

The hiking trail was planned as part of a supraregional network of trails in Central Germany by the Bund Kurhessischer Wandervereine as early as 1930 . In this original version it ran from Ederbringhausen to Mühlhausen / Thuringia . Due to the division of Germany , the Thuringian section Treffurt - Katharinenberg - Mühlhausen was no longer continuously accessible from the 1960s; the path ended at that time in the Hessian border town of Wanfried .

On the initiative of the Werratalverein eV, a working group was founded in 1994 to examine the reconstruction of this hiking trail in the Thuringian section, and it was finally decided to extend the trail to Kyffhäuser .

course

The Barbarossaweg connects the legendary Kyffhäuser with numerous cities, monasteries and castles that Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa visited during his reign in the 12th century or that already existed during his lifetime.

The entire route can be mastered in 15 daily stages, each around 15 to 30 kilometers in length.

  1. (23 km) Korbach - Nordenbeck Castle - Lichtenfels , district Dalwigksthal
  2. (21 km) Lichtenfels - Lichtenfels Castle - Frankenau
  3. (22 km) Frankenau - Bad Wildungen
  4. (18 km) Bad Wildungen - Büraberg - Fritzlar
  5. (24 km) Fritzlar - Felsberg - Heiligenburg Castle - Melsungen
  6. (23 km) Melsungen - Spangenberg - Reichenbach
  7. (22 km) Reichenbach - Waldkappel - Wichmannshausen
  8. (22 km) Wichmannshausen - Boyneburg - Weißenborn
  9. (24 km) Weißenborn - Heldrastein - Treffurt
  10. (21 km) Treffurt - Normannstein Castle - Katharinenberg - Mühlhausen / Thuringia
  11. (15 km) Mühlhausen / Thuringia - Ammern - Sollstedt (Menteroda)
  12. (22 km) Sollstedt (Menteroda) - Lohra Castle
  13. (28 km) Lohra Castle - Sondershausen
  14. (30 km) Sondershausen - Göllingen - Bad Frankenhausen
  15. (15 km) Bad Frankenhausen - Kyffhäuser - Reichsburg Kyffhausen - Tilleda

In addition to the numerous historical sights, the hiking trail should also lead to a constant encounter with modern art. The artist initiative Ars Natura has therefore installed around 150 works of art along the Barbarossaweg - especially in the part between Bad Wildungen and Waldkappel. It has set itself the goal of transforming the entire length of the hiking trail into an art hiking trail .

From Heldrastein to Ederbringhausen there is a 130 km section of the German Unity hiking trail on the Barbarossaweg.
